Research interests

I am a herpetologist and field biologist. My main research interests include biodiversity, bioacoustics, evolutionary biology and human wildlife-conflicts. I like to combine different methods to disentangle hidden diversity, and to develop new approaches for monitoring wildlife through time. Frequently asked question: How can we make our Big Field Data smart?

Integrative taxonomy of Neotropical Herpetofauna

By combining different disciplines and methods, such as morphology, bioacoustics and molecular data I search for candidate species and study trait evolution. Of particular interest are the frogs of Bolivia, and how their advertisement calls can be used as a tool for species delimitation. Current taxonomic revisions: Leptodactylus, Dendropsophus, Proceratophrys

Inventory and monitoring biodiversity

At the research station Chiquitos in Bolivia we develop new methods for biodiversity inventories, such as an eDNA-based inventory of frogs, and we conduct monitorings with passive audiorecorders (since 2010) and camera traps (since 2017). The next step will be to develop analyzing methods to convert these big data to smart data in order to  to detect changes in local faunal comunities and to develop action plans for conservation

Using camera traps we want to study the human-jaguar conflict on cattle ranches in Bolivia. How abundant is the jaguar and its natural prey at our site? When and why does the jaguar feed on cattle instead of its natural prey? Can we develop anti-predation strategies to manage the conflict at our site?

Recent developments in passive acoustic monitoring and acoustic pattern recognition now enable us to comprehensively record and analyze acoustic events over longer periods of time. In this project I study the calling effort and trait variation of white-lipped frogs (Leptodactylus) during sustained calling over several nights. What is the absolute calling effort, and how do frogs manage their energetic limitations?
