In 1969 the Senckenberg Nature Research Society (SGN) founded a Research Station in the Hessian Spessart in the village of Biebergemuend. For 30 years the station was a centre for scientific research focussing on European Highlands, especially their native biodiversity and community ecology of highland plants and animals.
Over the past few years river ecology and conservation research have become the main fields of interest.
The positive development of the Spessart Research Station during the last years and the increasing number of staff members (recently 25) has made a relocation inevitable. In 2006 the Station moved into the building of the former dairy school in Gelnhausen, which offers more space for research work.
