Adaptation, Biokulturelle Diversität und Ökologie des Menschen


Im Tätigkeitsschwerpunkt „Adaptation, Biokulturelle Diversität und Ökologie des Menschen“ wird mittels innovativer Methoden der archäologischen, paläontologischen und paläoanthropologischen (Feld)-Forschung untersucht, welche Umweltparameter die menschliche Biologie und Kognition beeinflussen. Es geht darum zu verstehen, welchen Einfluss der Mensch im Laufe seiner Evolution auf die Umwelt nahm und welcher Zusammenhang zwischen Änderungen der Umweltbedingungen und der parallel verlaufenden biologischen und kulturellen Anpassungen des Menschen besteht.

Die Forschungsschwerpunkte konzentrieren sich auf folgende Forschungsfragen:

  1.  Wie, und bis zu welchem Grad, beeinflusst die Umwelt die menschliche Biologie, Subsistenz, Kognition und das soziale Verhalten?
  2. Welchen Einfluss nahm der Mensch auf seine Umwelt im Laufe der menschlichen Evolution?
  3. Was ist die Beziehung zwischen Umwelt-Dynamiken und der kulturellen Entwicklung und Diversität?

Wissenschaftler*innen des SHEP in Tübingen, der Abteilung Paläoanthropologie in Senckenberg Frankfurt und in der Senckenberg Forschungsstation in Weimar sowie des Langzeitprojekts ROCEEH der Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften forschen in diesem Tätigkeitsschwerpunkt, abgekürzt Human ABC+.

Auch das Human-Ethologische Filmarchiv ist in diesem Tätigkeitsschwerpunkt angesiedelt. Die Integration des Projekts Schöningen in den Tätigkeitsschwerpunkt und die Erweiterung der dort laufenden Grabungen ergänzen das Verständnis der Umwelt, in der sich der Mensch entwickelte und die ihn zu dem machten, was er heute ist.

Forschungsinteressen

Meine Forschungsinteressen sind vielfältig und reichen von der allgemeinen Paläobiologie und Paläoanthropologie von Säugetieren bis zu fast allen Themen von Knochen- und Zahnanalysen. 2001 habe ich bei Senckenberg ein Bildverarbeitungslabor für die 3D-Digitalisierung, virtuelle Bearbeitung, Rekonstruktion und Morphometrie von Wirbeltier-Hartgewebe eingerichtet. Der Schwerpunkt meiner Forschung liegt auf der Struktur und Funktion von Zähnen mit einem Hauptaugenmerk auf der evolutionären Entwicklung, diätetischen und kulturellen Anpassungen im Kausystem. Eine Reihe meiner nationalen und internationalen Forschungsprojekte, die von der DFG (z. B. DFG-FOR771) und der EU (EU-MRTN-CT-2005-019564) finanziert wurden, haben zur Entwicklung der bekannten Okklusalen Fingerabdruck-Analyse (OFA) geführt.
