Research interests:
My primary research focus is on the taxonomy and systematics of marine amphipod Crustaceans, especially concentrating on deep-sea taxa. Other interests include the ecology and behaviour of amphipods and other marine invertebrates.
Currently I am studying a collection of abyssal amphipods from the north-east Pacific (4100 m depth) and DIVA-2 amphipods from the south-east Atlantic (5000 + m); ANDEEP collections of corophiid amphipods; Arctic crustaceans from the Beaufort Sea and a monitoring study involving Antarctic crustaceans from McMurdo Sound.
The purpose of my visit to the DZMB was to have my first real opportunity to examine the DIVA-2 amphipod collections, which we collected onboard the RV Meteor in Feb-March 2005. There was not very much opportunity to examine collections during the cruise. It was great also to be able to meet colleagues Pedro Martínez and Kai Horst George at the DZMB and discuss future DIVA collaborations with them.
I also took the opportunity to visit Dr. Hans Georg Andres (DZMB - Zoologisches Institut und Museum, Hamburg) and examine some of the DIVA-1 amphipod material, and cross reference this material with the DIVA-2 collections and discuss potential future collaborations with him.
A special thank you goes out to Pedro and his family for all their hospitality during our trip---you guys are great friends. One other special person deserves much thanks for all her endless logistical support and help and that is Christa Dohn, who is the best secretary/assistant you could ask for—thanks again Christa!!
My stay was short so I hope to see all of you again soon. Your facility is great to work at!
Dates of my stay at the DZMB:
17.07.2006 - 03.08.2006
