In 2004, in line with a structural reform of Senckenberg, the Department of River Ecology and Conservation was founded. It comprises three sections as well as the Research Station Gelnhausen.

River ecology research focuses mainly on studying the effects of multiple stressors (pollution, development, climate change, etc.) on the biodiversity of European freshwater ecosystems. The sections on river ecology research at Senckenberg are Floodplain Ecology, and River Ecosystem Management.

In the research area conservation genetics, modern molecular and genetic methods are used to assess the impact of rapid anthropogenic environmental change on the structure of populations and the genetic monitoring of threatened species. In both research fields basic and applied research is done.

In addition, the internationally integrated Rhine-Main Observatory conducts biological long-term monitoring of changes in biological diversity in space and time over a large area.

The Department of River Ecology and Conservation is part of the network BioFrankfurt (www.biofrankfurt.de). This network is comprised of sixteen leading institutes in research, education, nature conservation, and development cooperation, which work together for the conservation of biological diversity (biodiversity) and on strengthening societal recognition of the importance of biodiversity to human health.

Biological diversity is the resources of our planet, the diversity of all genes, species and ecosystems. As the baseline for food security, new medication, technological advance, intact places for leisure and recreation, and much more biodiversity is the foundation of life. As with climate protection, biodiversity conservation is a challenge of global as also regional importance, to which we all can actively contribute.
