Vertebrate Zoology

Instructions to authors

VERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY (formerly Zoologische Abhandlungen) is a scientific journal published by Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung.

Papers submitted for publication should deal with vertebrates. Research fields covered by VERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY are taxonomy, morphology, anatomy, phylogeny (molecular or morphology-based), historical biogeography, and paleontology of vertebrates. Original contributions as well as reviews are welcome. Descriptions of new taxa should be integrated into a proper context (e.g. taxonomic revision, phylogenetic or biogeographical framework). Starting with August 2017, only manuscripts in English are considered for publication.

Submission of a manuscript implies that the same work has not been published or submitted elsewhere.

It is anticipated that authors make every effort to submit a concise and linguistically correct text. Manuscripts of insufficient scientific quality, not conforming to the journal style or requiring extensive linguistic or stylistic improvement will be rejected outright. The printing format of VERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY is A4 (210 mm × 297 mm), the type area is 165 mm × 250 mm. For style and format, authors are requested to consult a current issue of VERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY.

All manuscripts will be reviewed by two peers. Based on their reports and an editorial assessment, the editors decide upon acceptance. When the review procedure is completed, the review documents and the decision will be sent to the corresponding author.

By submission of a manuscript, authors permit publication of their contribution and accept the copyright note of VERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY. There are no page charges, and no royalties will be paid to authors.

Twenty reprints of each paper are free of charge. Additional reprints may be ordered. Furthermore, authors receive PDFs of their published papers free of charge and are welcome to further distribute them for non-commercial purposes.

The PDFs will also be freely accessible at It is anticipated that authors submitting a manuscript to VERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY accept these rules.

Manuscripts and all related correspondence should be sent by email to [up to 15 MB per message].
