Diversitäts- und Integrationsausschuss


Diversität ist der wissenschaftliche Eckpfeiler von Senckenberg. Wir glauben, dass die Diversifizierung der menschlichen Komponente des Senckenberg-Ökosystems unsere Stärke und Widerstandsfähigkeit erhöhen wird. Der Senckenberg Diversitäts- und Integrationsausschuss wurde Ende 2020 gebildet und ist dem Verwaltungsrat unterstellt. Es hat die Aufgabe, die Senckenberg Diversitätsstrategie zu entwickeln und umzusetzen. Eines der vielen Ziele ist, die Vielfalt unserer Mitarbeiter und unserer Mitglieder sowie unser Engagement für die Gesellschaft zu erhöhen.
Der Ausschuss setzt sich aus Vertretern zusammen, die aus Schlüsselaspekten der Organisation und jedem der Senckenberg-Institute ernannt werden, und wird von vielen weiteren interessierten Mitarbeitern in der gesamten Institution unterstützt, die zu dieser Arbeit beitragen.

Research interests

My group works on the evolution of diversity in molluscs and other marine invertebrates. Morphology shapes how each species responds to environmental change, in the modern world and in the fossil record. We often focus on very strange body forms, like bivalved gastropods, or apparently conservative forms, like chitons. We use tomography (right) to visualise animal adaptations in 3D and understand the world from other organisms‘ points of view.

Understanding evolutionary radiations, survivorship, and the way animals respond to environmental change, require high resolution data from multiple disciplines, and the research infrastructure in museum collections. The work in my research group crosses genetics, morphology, anatomy, neurobiology, physiology, computational modelling, and experimental approaches, to understand species diversity.

Some of these are discussed in my recent book, What Species Mean: A User’s Guide to the Units of Biodiversity, published by CRC/Taylor & Francis in early 2018.

Angel Blanco studied Geology (Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), 2003). Has the Master in Experimental Paleontology (UB) (2005) and Master in Prehistoric Archaeology, Ancient and Medieval History (UAB) (2012). During several years he have worked as curatorial preparator and taxidermist in the most important Museums or Scientific Institutions of Spain (Museum of Natural Sciences of Barcelona, Natural History Museum of Madrid, Zooarch Lab of Barcelona…). Also, he worked during the same period as palaentologist in different sites in Spain from Cretaceous to Early Pleistocene. Currently, he works on multiple fish assamblages from Pleistocene sites of Iberian Peninsula (Atapuerca, Barranco León, Fuentenueva 3 Baza and Pinilla del Valle) and Germany (Hohlenstein-Stadel, Helga Abri and Hohle Fels), on others from Pliocene-Pleistocene in Republic of Georgia (Dmanisi); early history and historical time deposits of Neolithic Age (The Draga, El Mirador), Iberian (Mas Castellar de Pontós) or medieval (Castles of Montsoriu and El Catllar).

RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research interests involve the field of climate-vegetation interactions and human influences. This matches well with the BMBF-funded SPACES project EMSAfrica (Ecosystem Management Support for Climate Change in Southern Africa). EMSAfrica focuses on the effects of natural disturbances, such as the impacts of land-use and climate change on the structure and functioning of South African terrestrial ecosystems. It also focuses on the production of information relevant to ecosystem management in the region.  Within the scope of this project I am working with the dynamic vegetation models (DVMs) aDGVM and aDGVM2 with a focus on Southern African vegetation changes. By using DVMs, I would like to detect changes in ecosystems and identify areas that require special attention in ecosystem management. Thus, I can contribute to protecting and maintaining biodiversity in vulnerable ecosystems.

Research interests

Synthesis of the approaches that investigate historical (geographic and palaeoclimatic changes) and contemporary (i.e., like habitat loss, fragmentation and anthropogenic climate change) processes underlying current patterns of genetic variation is key to reconstruct the evolutionary history of species and implement conservation measures promoting their long-term persistence. Resolving the evolutionary and ecological patterns and processes that underlie speciation and diversification is a central theme of my research. While the focus of my current research is on landscape genomics, plant microbiome and integrated species distribution modelling, however, I have an interdisciplinary research background ranging from plant systematics to population genetics and phylogeography.

Current projects 

I am currently working as a postdoctoral researcher on a project funded by Translation Biodiversity Genomics (TBG), wherein, I am investigating the role of micro-evolutionary processes in determining genetic and phenotypic diversity across a heterogeneous landscape, and doing genome‐wide association studies on the phyllosphere microbiome using Microthlaspi erraticum (claspleaf pennycress) as a model system. Apart from my research work, I am Young Scientist main speaker at Senckenberg, and also working with a small group of volunteers on a project “Translating the Climate Change Science to Human”- aiming to educate and empower communities, particularly children and women on Climate.
