Stratigraphische Mitteldevon-Sammlung: Stratigraphisch und/oder faziell wichtige Gesteinsproben, die während des letzten Jahrhunderts in den Eifeler Kalkmulden genommen wurden. Da die Aufschlussverhältnisse sich in den Eifeler Kalkmulden dramatisch verschlechtert haben, konserviert die senckenbergische Mitteldevon-Sammlung somit wichtige Gesteinsdokumente aus dem Typus-Gebiet der Eifel-Stufe, die als erste von zwei Stufen des Mitteldevons international angewendet wird (siehe deutschen GSSP in der Eifel).
Mikropaläontologie
Mikropaläontologie ist eine Wissenschaft, die sich mit mikroskopisch kleinen Tieren und Pflanzen, die in der Regel eine Größe von unter 1 mm haben, beschäftigt, mit ihrer Morphologie, Taxonomie, Paläobiologie, Paläoökologie, Verbreitungsmustern und ihrer Anwendbarkeit zum Verständnis der Erdgeschichte.
Viele der Gruppen mikroskopisch kleiner Tiere und Pflanzen leben noch heute, und Mikropaläontologen sind an lebenden Formen interessiert, um die fossilen Funde interpretieren zu können. Die meisten mikrofossilen Gruppen sind einfache, aus einer einzelnen Zelle bestehende, Organismen, die nur selten größer als 1 mm werden und deshalb nur mit optischen und Elektronenmikroskopen und anderen speziell entwickelten Techniken untersucht werden können.
Forschung im Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg konzentriert sich auf Ostracoden (Mikropaläontologie I), Conodonten (Historische Geologie und Fazieskunde) und Sporen & Pollen (Paläobotanik, Palynologie). Andere mikrofossile Gruppen sind durch große Sammlungen repräsentiert, besonders Foraminiferen und Otolithen.
Forschung und Sammlungen der Mikropaläontologie sind auf das gesamte Phanerozoikum mit besonderen Schwerpunkten im Mesozoikum und im Tertiär bezogen und müssen daher primär dem Schwerpunkt „Biodiversität und Erdsystem-Dynamik“ zugeordnet werden. So weit es um rezentes Material geht, bestehen auch Beziehungen zu „Biodiversität und Systematik“.
Die größte von der Sektion betreute Sammlung beinhaltet fossile und rezente Ostracoden mit Material, das die Evolution dieser Gruppe vom Paläozoikum bis zum heutigen Tag mit weltweiten Belegen repräsentiert, und zwar sowohl in marinen als auch in nicht marinen Lebensräumen. Die Ostracoden-Sammlung ist besonders reich an devonischem (Becker-Sammlung) sowie an post-paläozoischem (Triebel, Malz, Krömmelbein, Jellinek u.a. Sammlungen) Material. Die über 21.000 katalogsierten Stücke beinhalten mehr als 1.000 Holo-, Neo- und Lectotypen.
Die Foraminiferen-Sammlung wurde begründet mit Material von klassischen Foraminiferen-Untersuchungen aus dem deutschen Jura und der deutschen Unter-Kreide, die in den 30er Jahren anhand von Proben gemacht wurden, die beim Bau des Mittellandkanals genommen wurden, sowie an Bohrkernen aus Erdölbohrungen. Jüngeren Datums ist umfangreiches Material, das beim Tunnelbau für die Frankfurter U-Bahn gewonnen werden konnte. Die Foraminiferen-Sammlung ist besonders reich an fossilem Material aus Europa. Wichtige kürzliche Erweiterungen sind die Franz und Gustava Kahler-Sammlung, eine umfangreiche Spezialsammlung für Fusulinen, großwüchsige Foraminiferen aus dem jüngeren Paläozoikum, und 2005 die umfangreiche Privatsammlung von Dr. Helmut Bartenstein.
Der Grundstein für die Otolithen-Sammlung wurde mit der Sammlung von Prof. Dr. W. Weiler gelegt, die nach seinem Tod vom Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg erworben werden konnte, zusammen mit der zugehörigen Fachliteratur. Steigendes Interesse an dieser Gruppe von Mikrofossilien war in der Erkenntnis begründet, dass Otolithen hervorragende Indikatoren für stratigraphisches Alter sind, besonders im Zeitalter des Tertiärs. Heute beinhaltet die Sammlung mehr als 10.000 Stücke, darunter über 250 Typen, und ist besonders reich an Material aus dem Tertiär sowie an rezentem Vergleichsmaterial.
