Die Sektion Paläoklima- und Paläoumweltforschung befasst sich vornehmlich mit der quantitativen, semi-quantitativen und qualitativen Rekonstruktion von Paläoklima- und anderen Paläoumweltparametern, sowie der zeitlichen und räumlichen Dynamik dieser Parameter, basierend auf fossilen Organismen.
Die Sektion leistet dabei Beiträge zu verschiedenen Tätigkeitsschwerpunkten des Forschungsgebiets Biodiversität und Erdsystem-Dynamik.
Die Forschungsschwerpunkte des Fachgebiets umfassen derzeit
Verschiedene Projekte decken dabei den gesamten Bereich vom Jungpaläozoikum bis zum Känozoikum ab.
Die Sektion betreut die ehemalige Sammlung des Geoarchivs Marburg.
Die Marburger Sammlung enthält Objekte aus den unterschiedlichsten Regionen dieser Welt. Von Hessen über Europa nach Asien oder auch Amerika und Nordafrika – aus allen Winkeln der Erde trugen Wissenschaftler der Marburger Universität die Stücke für ihre Arbeit und die Sammlung der Marburger Universität zusammen. Sie stammen aus den Erdzeitaltern vom Präkambrium bis ins Tertiär. Zwischen den fossilen Funden finden sich mitunter auch rezente Vergleichsstücke.
Der 2013 in das Senckenberg Forschungsinstitut nach Frankfurt überführte, größere Teil des GeoArchivs Marburg umfasst 125 Sammlungsschränke mit etwa 6.000 Schubladen. Darin befinden sich geschätzte 142.000 Einzelobjekte.
