Er studierte Biologie und Chemie an der Universität Erlangen und arbeitete am dortigen Zoologischen Institut als wissenschaftlicher Assistent. 1981 kam er als Leiter der Museumspädagogik ans Senckenberg Naturmuseum bis zu seinem Ruhestand 2011.
