Young Scientists

Dear young scientists,

We are the representatives of BSc, MSc, interns, doctoral students, PhDs, and postdocs at all Senckenberg locations. We act as an interface between students, supervisors, and our administration.

All young scientists are invited to get involved with Young Scientists and contribute their ideas.

What are we all about?

  • Networking across Senckenberg locations through monthly meetings and our annual Young Scientists Retreat.

  • Representating young scientists through our role in the Science Committee (advises the Board of Directors) and regular meetings with a member of the Board of Directors.

  • Providing support: Do you have ideas or problems?

  • Get information about training programs and administrative procedures.

  • Enable exchange with other networks (Leibniz PhD Network, N²).

Would you like to be added to our mailing list or get more involved? Then send us an email.

News

Events

On the third Monday of every month at 10 a.m., all Young Scientists are invited to our Monthly Meetings on Zoom. The discussions are led by the main and site spokespersons, who are always looking for feedback and ideas from other young scientists. We discuss topics from the various Senckenberg locations and our working groups (see below) and plan our location spokesperson meetings and Young Scientists Retreats. Please send us an email if you would like to suggest a specific topic for the meetings. We always welcome new participants, even if you just want to listen and learn about what we do. Often, a group from your location already participates, so it is best to contact the location representatives directly (see below). Our monthly meetings are also a great way to find out how you can get involved with us.

If you use X or Instagram, you can use the hashtag #YSatSGN to be part of our community on social media.

Retreats

We host annual Young Scientists Retreats, which began in Wilhelmshaven in 2008 and take place alternately in Frankfurt and at other Senckenberg locations.

Our Young Scientists Retreat is a great opportunity to network, learn more about Senckenberg, and share your research.

  • See and be seen: Present your current research, thesis, or a (planned) project through science slams, lectures, and posters.
  • Insights into Senckenberg: Learn more about structures and processes within Senckenberg and discuss with the Senckenberg Executive Board.
  • Benefit from the Senckenberg network: Meet other scientists, exchange ideas, and benefit from new collaborations and our experience. Invited guests give lectures on interesting research projects or specific topics relevant to young scientists, such as mentoring, third-party funding, etc.
  • Travel to new places: Get to know the other Senckenberg locations, their research areas, facilities, and employees.
  • Have fun! Every Young Scientists Retreat includes an excursion—we waded through the mudflats in Wilhelmshaven, looked at geological formations in Saxon Switzerland, explored fossil deposits in the Messel Pit, and searched for beavers in the Spessart.
