Libraries / Archive

The scientific libraries and archives of the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research are of fundamental importance for scientific activity, providing professional preservation of historically valuable book collections, research and acquisition, preparation and availability of subject-specific information, and provision of printed and digital media. Based on Senckenberg’s federal structure, they ensure individual access to the existing book collections at the various locations.

The scientific libraries and literature inventories of the Senckenberg – Leibniz Institution for Biodiversity and Earth System Research are of essential importance for scientific activities; this includes the proper preservation of historically significant book collections, research and acquisition, preparation and availability of specialist information, and the provision of printed and digital media. Based on Senckenberg’s federal structure, they ensure individual access to the existing literature inventory in the different locations.

Since January 1, 2005, the Frankfurt am Main City and University Library (StUB) and the Senckenberg Library (SeB) have jointly formed the central library of Goethe University under the name Johann Christian Senckenberg University Library.

Senckenberg Frankfurt (SF) remains the owner of the collection it contributed from the former Senckenberg Library. This makes the Johann Christian Senckenberg University Library the main library at the Frankfurt site. In the fields of biology, botany, and zoology, the university library is the most important scientific library in Germany. Since 2017, the DFG Specialist Information Service for Biodiversity Research has been established here, drawing on Senckenberg’s scientific expertise and acquisitions from the Frankfurt book exchange.

Due to their historical development, the large Senckenberg libraries at the institute’s locations in Dresden (SNSD), Görlitz (SMNG), and Müncheberg (SDEI) have different scientific focuses (zoology and geology, soil biology, and entomology). These libraries serve as regional information centers in their respective scientific disciplines.

In addition, the Entomological Library at SDEI occupies an internationally prominent position due to its extensive collection of entomological literature. Furthermore, the library catalogs of SMNG and SDEI are already integrated into the Hessian Library and Information System (HeBIS). The holdings (as of 2010) of the libraries of the Senckenberg Natural History Collections can be searched in the K10plus union catalog.

Publication exchange

The international Senckenberg publication exchange is organized on a decentralized basis. The Senckenberg locations in Dresden, Frankfurt/M., Görlitz, and Müncheberg offer publications from their respective locations for exchange. Research institutes, museums, libraries, and publishers interested in obtaining journals, series, and books via the literature exchange and wishing to exchange their own publications on biological and geological/paleontological topics for Senckenberg publications are welcome to contact the relevant locations.
