Biogeography of benthopelagic copepods of the South Atlantik and Southern Ocean

Little is known about the biogeography of deep sea benthopelagic calanoid copepods. Up to now a high level of endemism, as stated for strictly benthic organisms, was considered typical. However, this point of view awaits revision, due to the limited studies on distributional ranges of benthopelagic calanoid taxa available so far.

Samples taken by the epibenthic sledge on German expeditions ANDEEP I-III, ANDEEP-SYSTCO and DIVA I-III, which contain not only benthic organisms but also benthopelagic calanoids, will offer valuable clues on the degree of endemism in the group of benthopelagic copepods.
