Ecology

Our section aims to study the ecology of insects, which encompass the vast majority of terrestrial life on earth and are therefore fundamental for biodiversity and its benefits to human well-being, the so-called ecosystem services. The field of ecology deals with the interactions among organisms and their physical environment which are jeopardised in the current Anthropocene era with unprecedented human-induced rates of global change. It is a biological discipline at the interface of systematics, biogeography, evolutionary biology and conservation and demands strong interactions with those disciplines. At SDEI a strong link exists in particular with the biogeography section, which also works with a focus on butterflies as model system. The integration of phylogenetic results in macroecological analyses which has been a focus of our work is starting to become a standard and an example of the intersection with evolutionary biology. Quite obvious is the strong link of ecology to the applied field of conversation, which has become a topic of growing concern due to accelerating rates of global biodiversity loss.
