Developing methods for monitoring and analysing human impact on biodiversity, placing results to a social ecological context and thus providing a systemic understanding of Anthropocene biodiversity change and its feedbacks on our society to ultimately guide sustainable use and conservation are the cornerstones of Research Field II.

Research Field „Biodiversity and People” focuses on the interplay between biodiversity and human impact, considering a wide range of biodiversity facets. We create applied as well as transformative knowledge to meet the huge challenges posed by global biodiversity loss. Research Field II has been reshaped and now comprises two research activities, with RA 2.1 concentrating on biodiversity change with humans as one key driver. The next steps towards a full geo-biodiversity perspective are made in RA 2.2. “Biodiversity, Social-Ecological Dynamics and Transformative Change“, in which human societies are themselves subject to research.
