Diptera

The main focus of research activities in the Diptera Section is on the taxonomy, systematics, phylogeny, ecology, and biodiversity of calyptrate flies within the superfamily Oestroidea, with special emphasis on the family Calliphoridae (Rhiniinae and Bengaliinae). This work combines classical morphology with modern molecular and phylogenomic techniques, with a strong focus on using museum specimens and historical DNA (hDNA). The research aims to improve our understanding of the evolutionary relationships, species diversity, and ecological roles of these flies, especially in the Afrotropical, Neotropical, and Palearctic regions.

The responsibilities of the Diptera Section also include managing the scientific reference collections of true flies (Diptera), hymenopterans (Hymenoptera), and dragonflies (Odonata). Particular attention is given to maintaining and developing these collections, with an emphasis on improving curation, digitization, and technical conservation. Additionally, relevant research is conducted on the biodiversity and systematics of fungus gnat-like flies (Sciaroidea: Mycetophilidae), especially in the forested areas of Saxony, like the Dresdner or Königsbrücker Heide  (more info in the research section)

Our research contributes to the Senckenberg research field “Biodiversity and Systematics.”
