The entomological library of the Senckenberg Deutsches Entomologisches Institut (SDEI, German Entomological Institute) is a major player in providing entomological information for scientists. The library is an associate of the  Virtual Library of Biology (VifaBio).

Since 2010 the library ia part of Hessischen Bibliotheks- und Informationssystem (HeBIS= electronic information and service union of academic libraries) and is a member of Cooperative Library Network Berlin-Brandenburg (KOBV).

History

Since 1849 Gustav Kraatz, founder of the SDEI, purchased rare and precious books. Among them were the works of Maria Sibylla Merian, A. J. Rösel von Rosenhof and J. Hübner. Due to further acquisitions of complete entomological libraries he created a considerably stock. Since 1909 the stock has continually been augmented by the intense international exchange of journals and series.

Stock

The current stock consists of about:

  • 24,000 monographies, anthologies
  • 48,000 Volumes of periodical of about 2.400 journals and series (titles)
  • 850 serial journals
  • 118,000 separata
  • 1,500 further media (maps, films, CD’s, CD-ROM’s, DVD’s,VCR)

Additionally there are collections of bibliographies and biographies.
