Data-driven research group and unit of the Senckenberg Data and Modelling Center

The curation, mobilization, processing, and scientific evaluation of information and data in the field of geoscience and biodiversity form the main focus of the Geobiodiversity Information and Data Management unit.

The team plays a key role in curating the collection data, renewing the collection management system, and digitizing the collection.
However, scientific data not associated with the physical collection also forms an important area of work.

In addition, various research projects, mainly in the field of marine zoology, are carried out within the group.

The digitization of collection items is one of the greatest challenges facing natural history collections. Our museum collections not only represent the majority of known species and comprise the largest number of available specimens, but also pose a number of logistical problems that have so far hampered attempts to develop automated digitization and data capture workflows. If we succeed in digitizing the natural history collection and storing the data from the literature in open-access databases, studies on biodiversity, the future distribution of species, and even changes in the functioning of the ecosystem could be significantly improved in many ways.

Our long-term vision is based on digitized products (digital specimens) rather than physical specimens. Establishing digital workflows facilitates curation, data exchange and linking, as well as large-scale biogeographic studies. This preserves the value of physical specimens, builds a global community, and enables the development of automated approaches to promote the discovery and conservation of geobiodiversity. These efforts will ultimately transform biodiversity assessments in response to fundamental questions raised by policymakers, including those related to global climate change.
