The section is primarily focusing on the quantitative, semi-quanitative and qualitative reconstruction of selected palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental parameters, as well as the dynamics of these parameters in space and time.
Thus the section is mainly contributing to the research area Biodiversity and Earth-System Dynamics.

Die Sektion betreut die ehemalige Sammlung des Geoarchivs Marburg.
Die Marburger Sammlung enthält Objekte aus den unterschiedlichsten Regionen dieser Welt. Von Hessen über Europa nach Asien oder auch Amerika und Nordafrika – aus allen Winkeln der Erde trugen Wissenschaftler der Marburger Universität die Stücke für ihre Arbeit und die Sammlung der Marburger Universität zusammen. Sie stammen aus den Erdzeitaltern vom Präkambrium bis ins Tertiär. Zwischen den fossilen Funden finden sich mitunter auch rezente Vergleichsstücke.
Der 2013 in das Senckenberg Forschungsinstitut nach Frankfurt überführte, größere Teil des GeoArchivs Marburg umfasst 125 Sammlungsschränke mit etwa 6.000 Schubladen. Darin befinden sich geschätzte 142.000 Einzelobjekte.
