The Research Station of Quaternary Palaeontology Weimar is a scientific location and collection site of the Senckenberg – Leibniz Institution for Biodiversity and Earth System Research and a department of the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum Frankfurt. The scientific focus is on the evolutionary history of animal and plant communities and the reconstruction of palaeoecosystems and environmental conditions that existed during the global climatic variability of the Quaternary Ice Age (a period spanning the past 2.6 million years).

Team

Technical working group Excavation & Preparation

The working group undertakes systematic and rescue excavations and deals with the preparation and conservation of the resulting fossil material, in accordance with the current research projects of each section. Historical collections are being successively re-preserved. The working group is responsible for the conservation of the collections. Other tasks include making replicas of original fossils, and constructing models. In addition, the group undertakes investigations of preparation and conservation methods, and monitors the condition of specimens stored in the collections. Members of the working group are in charge of providing technical support for associates and guest scientists when using the collections.

Technical working group Documentation, Digitization & Library

The responsibilities of the group comprise photography, graphics and surveying work (field and object documentation) in the field, and the production of scientific graphics and photographs for publications and presentations. Catalogues are kept for the 20 collections, which are recorded as part of ongoing digitization projects and compiled in a centrally accessible database. Our library is a scientific reference library (mainly for the Senckenberg staff and our numerous guest researchers) with the main collection dedicated to Quaternary Palaeontology. The library currently comprises more than 22,000 books, reprints, journals, and maps (updated: December 2025) and several archives on the work and history of the research station.
