In the context of a research project on the phylogeny of Marcgraviaceae, we invite applications for a

 

Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d)

in botany / bioinformatics (100%)

 

The project is funded by the German research foundation (DFG) and focusses on elucidating the evolutionary history of the neotropical plant family Marcgraviaceae which is diverse in its morphology, pollination syndromes and geography.

 

Your tasks:

  • Managing and developing bioinformatic pipelines for editing and analyzing genomic sequence data (Gene Capture)
  • Performing phylogenomic analyses, molecular dating, reconstructing trait and niche evolution and historical biogeography
  • Lab work, especially DNA extraction, PCR, Next Generation Sequencing
  • Writing scientific manuscripts and reports
  • Presenting research results at international conferences and publication in the relevant scientific journals

 

Your profile:

  • University degree – preferrably Ph.D.- in biology (systematics and evolution of seed plants) / bioinformatics (evolution/ sequence analysis) with
  • Experiences with next generation sequencing and analysis of phylogenomic data
  • Expertise with phylogenomic methods, reconstruction of trait evolutionand molecular dating methods
  • Good knowledge of seed plant systematics
  • Active publication record in international journals
  • Very good skills in managing scientific projects
  • Excellent English (written/ oral)

The Senckenberg Conservation Genetics Section in Gelnhausen conducts genetic monitoring of endangered wildlife in close cooperation with national conservation authorities, NGOs and scientific institutions across Germany and Europe. Our research group is responsible for genetic long-term monitoring of large carnivores in Germany and operates a genetic analysis service focused on the processing of non-invasively collected wildlife samples.

Your tasks:

 

·         Scoring and analysis of genotype (microsatellites, SNPs) and sequence data of mostly non-invasively collected wildlife samples to     

          identify individual, population, or species

·         Bioinformatic analyses of genetic and genomic datasets, e.g., regarding genetic population size estimations, gene flow patterns,

          inbreeding and genetic diversity

·         Writing of scientific reports and papers in German and English language

Your profile

·      Degree in biology/zoology or a related discipline, completed with a Ph.D.

·      International publication activity at a professional standard on the taxonomy and phylogeny of insects, preferably Coleoptera, with an emphasis on use of collection material

·      Willingness to participate in interdisciplinary work, including ability to successfully acquire third-party funded projects and to coordinate and successfully conclude these

·      Experience with international cooperation

·      Experience in the use and application of a wide range of research methods including modern techniques

·      Experience in the construction and care of insect collections, and preferably with digitalization of collection management

·      A wide and well-grounded knowledge of entomology and the capability of communicating this to the public

·      Active engagement in entomological societies and experience in the planning and running of professional meetings and other events involving a wider public

·      A good command of English and preferably a second language. An adequate knowledge of German is firmly desired, and its rapid acquisition expected if not already given

·      Experience in the leadership and instruction of technical assistants, students and interns, and in the cooperation with citizen scientists

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an independent intergovernmental body, established by the member states of the United Nations in 2012. Data Scientist / Science Coordinator (m/f/d)

 (full time position)

 

The IPBES task force on knowledge and data is mandated to oversee and take part in the implementation of the “advanced work on knowledge and data” of the rolling work programme up to 2030, and act in accordance with relevant decisions by the IPBES Plenary and its subsidiary bodies by supporting assessment experts in identifying, prioritizing and mobilizing existing knowledge and data needed for IPBES assessments, guiding the secretariat, including the dedicated technical support unit, in the management of the data, information and knowledge used in IPBES products, including the development of the web-based infrastructure, to ensure their long-term availability and data interoperability, and supporting the Bureau and the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel in reviewing the knowledge needs and gaps identified through IPBES assessments and other IPBES deliverables and in catalysing the generation of new knowledge and data. The task force will be supported by the Technical Support Unit on Knowledge and Data.

 

Your tasks

  •  You will provide scientific and technical support to the work of IPBES in the research-activities defined by the task force on knowledge and data
  • You will work closely with and report to the head of the technical support unit
  •  You will support the ongoing and upcoming assessments with the preparation and implantation of their data management plans
  •  You will provide technical solutions for the improved access and maintenance of frequently used data resources in IPBES products and integration of a wide variety of primary data into dynamic assessments
  • You will coordinate and provide technical support to the implementation of case studies on Natural Language Processing analysis of literary texts
  • You will work closely with the assessment experts, provide training and technical support to the documentation of their codes on development platforms, uploading to general-purpose open-access repositories, and documenting the metadata of the IPBES products
  • You will prepare information packages, webinars, and e-learning materials in collaboration with IPBES communication office around
  • You will travel nationally and overseas to represent the Technical Support Unit on Knowledge or running technical workshops for the assessment experts
  • You will contribute to the preparation of scientific publications and dissemination of the results at national and international conferences

 

Your profile

  • Doctoral or Master degree in computer science, information technology, natural resources, geoinformatics, or other disciplines at the science-policy interface, or relevant to data management, preferably with a focus on biodiversity and ecosystem services
  • Experience in Open Source programming
  • Experience in geospatial data handling and remote sensing products
  • Experience in setting up open research platforms, virtual research environments
  • Proficient in written and spoken English and experience in the scientific report writing, reviewing and editing
  • Motivation to work in an international team
  • Ability to plan, organize and execute complex multi-task problems, and to work precisely and effectively under time constraints
  • Outstanding social skills and capability to interact with the international science community

  • You will develop end user services to enable search on the IPBES products, in particular  bibliographic and geospatial data based on Open Source search engines like Elastic Search or SOLR

  • You will contribute to developments of the pilots in the field of Natural Language Processing and Artificial Intelligence
