Typische Biotope mariner interstitieller Meiofauna sind Sandstrände oder das Sandwatt. Aber auch in sublitoralen Sedimenten kommen die deutlich unter einem Millimeter kleinen Tiere vor.

Evolution und Biogeographie von Meiofauna
Biologische Evolution ist der fundamentale Prozess in der belebten Natur. Durch Vererbung und Veränderung von Merkmalen und die dauerhafte Aufspaltung von verwandtschaftlichen Linien führte und führt sie zu der atemberaubenden Artenvielfalt unseres Planeten. Damit verbunden ist eine faszinierende Vielfalt an Strukturen, Funktionen und Interaktionen.
Das Fachgebiet Evolution und Biogeographie von Meiofauna widmet sich der historischen Evolutionsforschung. Es werden Muster untersucht, die die Evolution in verschiedenen Zeiträumen bei unterschiedlichen Gruppen der Meiofauna (benthische Tiere mit einer Körpergröße von meist unter 1 mm) hinterlassen hat. Dies schließt z.B. die genetisch-geografische Populationsstruktur von Arten ein. Auch werden die phylogenetischen Verwandtschaftsverhältnisse ganzer Artengruppen (Taxa) sowie die evolutive Veränderung von Organsystemen und die damit verbundenen Anpassungseffekte erforscht. Die räumliche und ökologische Verbreitung von Arten kann Ergebnis aber auch Ursache evolutiver Prozesse sein. So kann beispielsweise eine ausreichend lang andauernde geographische Trennung von Populationen zu neuen, reproduktiv isolierten Arten führen. Biogeographie und historische Evolutionsforschung stehen also in einem engen Kontext. In der Phylogeographie werden Zusammenhänge zwischen Verbreitung und Evolution in jüngeren Zeitabschnitten erforscht, also überwiegend innerartliche, mikroevolutive Prozesse und Muster.
Organismen der Meiofauna unterscheiden sich in ihrer Biologie zum Teil recht stark von makrobenthischen Tieren. Dies hat neben vielen anderen Effekten einen Einfluss auf ihre geographische Verbreitung und Verbreitungsfähigkeit und damit auch auf die Evolution dieser Gruppen. Viele Taxa der Meiofauna sind im Vergleich zu ihren „großen Verwandten“ bezüglich ihrer Morphologie, Systematik, Populationsstruktur, Biogeographie und Biologie nur sehr spärlich erforscht. Das Fachgebiet widmet sich einigen dieser Kenntnislücken, wobei derzeit als Schwerpunkt, als „Modellgruppe“, die Gastrotricha (Bauchhärlinge) erforscht werden.
