Zoology

The Zoology Division focuses on the major research fields of slugs and snails, ants and mammals. Our current projects address questions of ecology and general biology of species as well as specific problems in the fields of taxonomy and systematics. The Geology/Palaeontology Section works on volcanology and the reconstruction of landscape evolution.

Sections of the division

Malacology

In Görlitz the focus of the mollusc collection and research is terrestrial snails and slugs, particularly slugs. We also house some small collections of other invertebrate taxa not covered by other divisions, for instance Crustacea.

Mammalogy

The Mammalogy Section preserves more than 37,000 mammals in its collection and is also responsible for the other classes of vertebrates. It conducts collection-based research on population ecology, population genetics and feeding ecology of mammals from Central Europe and Central Asia.

Geology and Palaeontology

Since nearly 200 years the Museum of Natural History Görlitz got a stuff position of a geological curator for the first time. While one third of the tasks in the 1990s consisted of collection work, research and public relations, the focus of the work later shifted in favor of research with the resulting collection work.

Pterygote Insects

Our main field of activity is Numeric-Morphology-Based-Alpha-Taxonomy (NUMOBAT) of the ant genera Camponotus, Cardiocondyla, Bothriomyrmex, Formica, Hypoponera, Lasius, Myrmica, Leptothorax, Tapinoma, Temnothorax and Tetramorium.
