Quaternary Palaeontology | Weimar

Collections

The collections of the Senckenberg Research Station of Quaternary Palaeontology Weimar comprise a total of 84,269 fossils, including preparations and series (updated: January 2023). Major parts of this material are described in original publications. These collections, one of the most diverse Quaternary palaeontological collections in Europe, is accessible for national and international researchers.

As witnesses to past animal and plant communities, the Weimar institution’s 19 research collections form the central research infrastructure of the site. They enable a broad spectrum of scientific research. Continuous collecting activities and annual excavations over decades have turned the collections of Pleistocene large mammals in particular into one of the world’s most complete archives of fossil finds from recent geological history. There are also significant collections of Quaternary small mammals and molluscs. The palaeobotanical collections include extensive evidence of the Pleistocene and Holocene vegetation history of Eurasia as well as recent reference material.

Continuous and professional preparation and conservation and storage of all fossil and recent specimens ensures the long-term preservation and availability of the Weimar Research Station’s unique collection material.

Due to extensive modernisation measures in the buildings of the Research Station in Weimar, the use of the collections until the end of 2024 is highly limited.

3D digitization and visualization of Quaternary type material

From our type collection a series of selected fossil specimens were photogrammetrically digitized in real colors and then visualized in high quality as part of a project funded by the Thuringian Ministry of Economics, Science and Digital Society (TMWWDG). The 3D models are available in Open Access.

Currently, 120 high-quality digital versions of the type material can be used in a variety of ways, both in the form of dense point clouds and as textured 3D meshes. Using various tools, it is possible to view the interactive objects from all perspectives and rotate them around defined axes. The enlargement of any surface details is also possible, as is an extremely precise measurement of individually definable measurement sections in three-dimensional space. In addition, data sets were created from which accurate to size reproductions for research, teaching and exhibition purposes can be produced using the 3D printing technology.

Users of the 3D models are also given direct access to the respective first descriptions of the types via permalinks, insofar as the copyright and rights of use currently allow.

It is planned to continue the 3D digitization project in order to make further type material from the Weimar collections virtually usable.
