The collections form Senckenberg’s centerpiece. Their maintenance and expansion are a permanent task – not least since they provide the basic information for our various research and educational mandates, from evolution, ecosystems, and biodiversity to climate and earth systems.
For these tasks, we need additional infrastructure that meets the requirements of modern natural history research. Collections must be housed in special, usually climate-controlled rooms. Laboratories are needed for molecular-biological studies, various imaging procedures, and isotope measurements. Digital applications such as the collection information system “SeSam” and the soil-zoological database “Edaphobase” as well as the entomological information center in Müncheberg, the climate chambers in the mesocosms hall, and – last but not least – our research vessel
all constitute additional, significant elements of our research infrastructure.
The opening of two new buildings, the Jügelhaus and the Arthur-von-Weinberg House, in the year 2018 (see page 56) was the most important development in Senckenberg’s infrastructure; it has led to tremendous improvements in our research work, in particular regarding the collections. As an example for the importance of scientific collections, the following article illustrates our path from traditional herbariums to modern information portals and broader applications. Of course, this can also be seen as an implementation of Senckenberg’s general motto, “From ideas to Applications,” which permeates all of our research fields.
