Yixian Summer School

Yixian Summer School

Sedimentology and Paleobiodiversity of Liaoning, China

Since 2018 the Yixian Summer School takes regularly place at the Sino-German Paleontological Museum in Yixian (Province Liaoning) in northeast China. This course is organized by scientists of the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung Frankfurt (Dr. Stephan Schaal, PD Dr. Irina Ruf, PD Dr. Olaf Lenz, Dr. Sonja Wedmann) together with colleagues from the museum in Yixian (Dr. Burkhard Pohl, Dr. Frédéric Lacombat). To date, further cooperation partners and contributors are colleagues from the Hebei GEO University (Prof. JiQiang), Jilin University (Prof. Sun Chun-lin) as well as IVPP (Dr. Jingmai O´Connor).

The sediments of the Lower Cretaceous Jehol Group in the northeast of China represent one of the world’s most famous fossil deposits, and are known as “Mesozoic Pompeii”. These deposits provide a unique insight into the so-called Jehol biota and their paleoecology. They are known for yielding feathered dinosaurs and many other exceptionally preserved vertebrate fossils such as early birds, mammals, pterosaurs, and amphibians, as well as abundant insects and the earliest flowering plants.

The Yixian Summer School aims at students of geo- and biosciences of the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main and TU Darmstadt as well as international students. They will have the opportunity to experience the paleobiodiversity and paleoecology of the Jehol Group on-site. Additionally, the joint work of students from different countries offers the possibility to get to know culturally different ways of life, thus gaining intercultural competencies and establishing international contacts for the future.

The schedule at the Sino-German Paleontological Museum includes daily lectures by the German and Chinese scientists from the involved institutions, for example on regional geology, limnic and terrestrial ecosystems, and the development of paleoclimate. In addition comparisons to the fauna, flora, and taphonomy of older and younger localities as the middle Jurassic Yanliao Biota of northeastern China or the Eocene Messel Pit from Germany are presented. The topics of the involved lecturers depend on their field of expertise.

At an excavation site in the Yixian Formation on the grounds of the museum, the students dig for fossils of vertebrates, insects and plants during daily excavations and conduct sedimentological logging.

The program also includes learning of preparation of fossils and casting techniques. Furthermore, the Summer School includes several field trips to paleontologically important localities nearby (e.g., Beipiao). The cultural program includes a visit to the Chinese Great Wall and a 1.5-day stay in Beijing.
