Senckenbergs’ contributions to IPBES


The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an independent intergovernmental body established by States to strengthen the science-policy interface for biodiversity and ecosystem services for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, long-term human well-being and sustainable development.

One of the most importants tasks of IPBES is to generate assessments of the state of biodiversity and ecosystem functions. The assessment may focus on a certain region or on a specific theme and are written by group of experts and task forces. The assessments are subject to an approval by the IPBES plenary.

Senckenberg hosts the ‘IPBES technical support unit on knowledge and data’.  Dr. Hanno Seebens und Dr. Aidin Niamir are members of the IPBES task force on knowledge and data. Prof. Markus Fischer is a member of the IPBES Multidisciplinary Expert Panel.

Senckenberg researchers have contributed to a number of regional and thematic assessments in the past.

IPBES meetings that were hosted by Senckenberg

  • August 2018: IPBES Global Assessment Third Authors Meeting (~160 world-class experts from over 50 countries)
  • August 2018: Management Committee Meeting of the IPBES Values Assessment
  • July 2020: IPBES Fellows Annual Meeting (postponed to January 2021)
  • July 2020: IPBES Task Force on knowledge and data (online)
