Frankfurt/M.

Frankfurt am Main is the headquarters location of Senckenberg – Leibniz Institution for Biodiversity and Earth System Research (SGN).

It is the home of the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum Frankfurt, which also comprises the research stations Weimar, Gelnhausen, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Messel Pit.”

Since Senckenberg’s establishment in the year 1817, the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum Frankfurt has focused on three main goals:

  • Integrative analysis of the importance of biodiversity in the earth system
  • Preservation and development of natural history collections as archives of life
  • Promotion of the public’s awareness of nature through a dialog with society

The natural history collections play a central role as a research infrastructure and as the basis of museum activities.
