In the Research Activity “Biogeography” we seek to understand how species and their parts are distributed in space and which factors – for instance, climate and morphology – are responsible. We are furthermore strive to discover broader patterns in the distribution of species or higher taxa and elucidate how they have changed over the course of Earth history with the help of fossils. We study major taxonomic groups such as lichens, bromeliads, roses, ochnoids, marine organisms, insects, reptiles and birds, especially in Africa, Europe and the Neotropics.
The techniques we use encompass genomic and phylogeographic methods as well as modelling and the analysis of “ancient DNA,” which allows us to incorporate material from classical, even historical collections into systematic-taxonomic, phylogenetic and population-genetic analyses. Genomic techniques increasingly help to put biogeographic analyses on an even more solid footing.
