Mammalogy

History

The main part of the historical vertebrate collection dates from the 19th century consisting mainly of mounted skins (”stuffed specimens”) of birds from all over the world.

The mammal collection were built up basically since 1980.

Nowadays the collection profile is determined by the general scientific demands and own research topics.

The major focus is on collecting and preserving vertebrates found dead with the objective of safe long-term keeping. The concept of the collection considers the requirements of current research projects.

Particularly mentionable are large series of skulls and skeletons of indigenous carnivores and small mammals as well as skeleton series of birds in populations samples.
