Senckenberg’s motto is “World of Biodversity”. Through our scientific research, we study the incredible diversity of the natural world. Diversity makes ecosystems more resilient, and more interesting. We believe this is true of the human ecosystem in our workplace, and we strive to nurture a diverse institution with employees from diverse backgrounds and many countries.
This year the German Diversity Day celebrates its 11th anniversary. The aim of the initiative, which was launched by Charta der Vielfalt (Diversity Charter) on 31 May 2012, is to advance the recognition, appreciation and inclusion of diversity in the workforce across Germany. Members of the Charta, including Senckenberg, strive to create a working environment that is free from bias. We work to support and value all our employees, regardless of age, ethnic origin and nationality, gender and gender identity, physical and mental abilities, religion and belief, sexual orientation or social origin. As a signatory of this diversity network, the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung will be flying the flag for diversity with creative actions on Tuesday 23 May 2023 as part of a Diversity Week.
Charta der Vielfalt
The Diversity Charter is a network of German employers, companies and institutions,who commit to promoting diversity. It was launched in December 2006 by four companies and is supported by the Federal Government Commissioner for Migration, Refugees and Integration, who is currently Minister of State Annette Widmann-Mauz. So far, over 4,500 companies and institutions have signed the Diversity Charter and are committed to an appreciative and prejudice-free working environment. The association thus represents 14.6 million employees in Germany, including the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung since June 2021.
Diversity and Inclusion Committee
Diversity is the scientific cornerstone of Senckenberg. Senckenberg stands for equality, equal rights, integration and inclusion, as well as the compatibility of work and family. We believe that diversifying the human component of the Senckenberg ecosystem will increase our strength and resilience. The Senckenberg Diversity and Inclusion Committee was formed at the end of 2020 and reports to the Board of Directors. It is tasked with developing and implementing the Senckenberg Diversity Strategy. Its many goals include increasing the support for our diverse staff and members, as well as reflecting diversity in our engagement with society. The committee is composed of representatives appointed from key aspects of the organisation and each of the Senckenberg Institutes, and is supported by many other interested staff members across the institution who contribute to this work.
Senckenberg makes a poster each year for Diversity Day, and the posters are free to download. A higher resolution version for large-scale printing is also available on request.
My group works on the evolution of diversity in molluscs and other marine invertebrates. Morphology shapes how each species responds to environmental change, in the modern world and in the fossil record. We often focus on very strange body forms, like bivalved gastropods, or apparently conservative forms, like chitons. We use tomography (right) to visualise animal adaptations in 3D and understand the world from other organisms‘ points of view.
Understanding evolutionary radiations, survivorship, and the way animals respond to environmental change, require high resolution data from multiple disciplines, and the research infrastructure in museum collections. The work in my research group crosses genetics, morphology, anatomy, neurobiology, physiology, computational modelling, and experimental approaches, to understand species diversity.
