Archiv für Molluskenkunde

History

Archiv für Molluskenkunde is the oldest malacological serial still in existence. It derives from the Nachrichtenblatt der Deutschen Malakozoologischen Gesellschaft, first published in 1868.

The name changed in 1921, but the numbering of volumes runs continuously between the titles. The foundation of both the journal and its parent society (Deutsche Malakozoologische Gesellschaft) was initiated by members of the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research (SNG) in Frankfurt. Formal responsibility for the journal was transferred to the SNG in the 1930s as a means to avoid government (Nazi) interference. However, there remains a close relationship with the Society and members may opt to receive the journal at a reduced price. The journal is still edited by curators of the Senckenberg museums, and the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung bears much of the financial cost. Since 2001, the distributors have been Schweizerbart.
