Late Neogene and Quaternary biodiversity and evolution: Regional developments and interregional correlations. Proceedings of the 18th International Senckenberg Conference (VI International Palaeontological Colloquium in Weimar) Volume II. (Courier Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg 259)

The late Lower Pleistocene fossil site of Untermassfeld, near the town of Meiningen in Southern Thuringia, was discovered in 1978 and has been the subject of 25 field seasons. The digs have produced a stunning array of fossil vertebrate remains in stratigraphic context, making this unquestionably one of the most important Quaternary localities in Europe. In a new monograph, R.-D. Kahlke provides the first full synthesis of the work, bringing the results up to date, and placing them in a broad biostratigraphic context. With some 14,000 determinable vertebrate fossils, the Untermassfeld assemblage represents the most complete vertebrate record of the time span 1.2-0.9 Ma BP in the Western Palaearctic.

Late Neogene and Quaternary biodiversity and evolution: Regional developments and interregional correlations. Proceedings of the 18th International Senckenberg Conference (VI International Palaeontological Colloquium in Weimar) Volume I. (Courier Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg 256)

The authors Ralf-Dietrich Kahlke and Dick Mol, members of the international Cerpolex/Mammuthus polar expedition on the Siberian Tajmyr-Peninsula, describe recent discoveries of glacial animal and plant remains from a region far to the north of the Arctic Circle. The fossil remains, found in the course of two expeditions, each lasting several months, carried out under inhospitable climatic conditions, are described and discussed within the context of international Quaternary palaeontology. In addition, the authors report on the techniques for discovering new localities using helicopters and boats, and also the underground deep-frozen storage and analysis of the fossil material. In this book they combine a wealth of newly published information with reminiscences of personal experiences during the field campaigns and local colour of the Siberian Arctic. The volume is enhanced by numerous illustrations and the evocation of the unsurpassed natural beauty of the modern tundra landscapes.

Late Neogene and Quaternary biodiversity and evolution: Regional developments and interregional correlations. 18th International Senckenberg Conference – VI International Palaeontological Colloquium in Weimar (Germany), 25th – 30th April, 2004. Conference Volume. (Terra Nostra – Schriften der Alfred-Wegener-Stiftung 2004/2)

During the 6th millennium BC in Central Europe the so called Neolithic Revolution took place. The first appearance of agriculture and stock farming in Central European is associated with the “Linear Ceramic Culture” named from the characteristic decoration of these ceramics. Although settlements of this culture have been excavated, contemporary burial sites are extraordinarily rare. In this monograph H.-D. Kahlke documents the cemeteries at Sondershausen and Bruchstedt (Thuringian), which he systematically excavated and investigated by himself. The detailed publication of these older Linear Ceramic Culture burial grounds fills a long-standing gap in knowledge and allows comparisons with cemeteries of the younger Linear Ceramic Culture in other areas of Germany, Slovakia, The Netherlands and France.

H.-D. KAHLKE: Sondershausen und Bruchstedt: Zwei Gräberfelder mit älterer Linienbandkeramik in Thüringen. (Weimarer Monographien zur Ur- und Frühgeschichte 39)

Sixteen contributions describe the geological and palaeontological evolution of Thuringia during the Tertiary and Quaternary – particularly the Neogene and Pleistocene development of the landscape, Palaeogene stratigraphy, the Tertiary between Leipzig and Altenburg, and the basalt deposits in the Thuringian Rhön mountains. Five related contributions describe the fossil remains (micro- and macroflora, molluscs, insects, small and large mammals) from more than 70 key Thuringian Pliocene and Quaternary fossil sites. Further contributions are dedicated to the Zersatzgrobschotter (Coarse Gravel) of the Lower Pleistocene, the Eemian travertines of Burgtonna, Weichselian sediments in the Ilm and Saale valley, gypsum solution during Late Pleistocene to historical times, and Quaternary mass displacements on the Wellenkalk escarpment.

All contributions of this richly illustrated volume include extensive bibliographies and English summaries. This volume is dedicated to the XVI. INQUA-Congress 2003 in Reno/Nevada.
