A large part of the research at the DZMB is financed by third-party funds raised from various donors. For example, doctoral and post-doctoral positions have to be be financed from third-party funds.

ANTARCTIC Meio-Macro

Many ecosystems around Antarctica are undergoing rapid changes, particularly in ice cover dynamics. It is not known if and how this development influences the processes at the seafloor, the benthic functions. For a comprehensive understanding of ecosystem functioning it is, hence, necessary to determine the role of different ecosystem components (e.g. faunal community groups) for seafloor processes under changing and stable ice cover regimes.

MGF Baltic Sea

The project MGF Baltic Sea, together with MGF North Sea, is part of the Geman Marine Research Alliance (DAM; “Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung“) pilot missions with the title: Exclusion of mobile bottom-contact fishing in marine protected areas of the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the North Sea and Baltic Sea. The abbreviation “MGF“ stands for the German expression “mobile grundberührende Fischerei“ which means “mobile bottom-contact fishing”.

SPP 1991 Taxon-OMICS

The Taxonomic Project “Ophiuroid phylogenomics: Illuminating dark abyssal biodiversity” is part of the DFG priority program 1991 “Taxon-Omics: New approaches for discovering and naming biodiversity”. The researchers from this project combine in gerneral “taxonomy,” the process of discovering and naming new species, with exciting 21st century “-omics’”methodologies, like genomics and transcriptomics.

BSH „Neobiota“

Research and development project since 2021 The connectivity of maritime and inland waterways promotes the risk of unnoticed distribution of non-indigenous species in the form of biofouling on ship hulls or by ballast water. While impacts of invasive species on land are rather quickly visible, impacts within the water regime remain invisible at first. This may result in potentially irreparable interference with the existing local flora and fauna and the impairment of an established ecosystem.

FishNet

Das FishNet-Projekt wurde vom Landesbetrieb für Küstenschutz, Nationalpark und Meeresschutz Schleswig-Holstein (Nationalparkverwaltung) ins Leben gerufen und ist ein EU gefördertes Forschungsprojekt.
