River Ecology & Conservation

Our research in River Ecology focuses mainly on studying the effects of multiple stressors (pollution, hydromorphological degradation, climate change, etc.) on biodiversity of European freshwater ecosystems. The research is organized in two sections: River and Floodplain Ecology and River Ecosystem Management.

The Conservation Genetics group develops and applies modern DNA-based methods to assess the impact of rapid anthropogenic environmental change on species populations and to use these methods in the genetic monitoring of threatened species.

In both River Ecology and Conservation basic and applied research is done.

Additionally, we run the Rhine-Main Observatory (RMO), a Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) site where we monitor and investigate biodiversity and environmental change. The RMO is embedded in the national, European and global LTER networks.
