Fließgewässerökologie und Naturschutzforschung


2004 wurde im Rahmen einer Strukturreform die Abteilung für Fließgewässerökologie und Naturschutzforschung gegründet. Sie umfasst zwei Sektionen, ein Fachgebiet sowie den Standort Gelnhausen.

Die Fließgewässerökologie beschäftigt sich im Wesentlichen mit Untersuchungen zum Einfluss verschiedener Stressoren (Verschmutzung, Verbau, Klimawandel, etc.) auf die Biodiversität europäischer Fließgewässer. Sie besteht aus den Sektionen Fluss- und Auenökologie und Flussökosystemmanagement.

Im Fachgebiet Naturschutzgenetik werden moderne molekulargenetische Methoden zur Erfassung der Auswirkungen schneller anthropogener Umweltveränderungen auf die Struktur von Populationen sowie für das genetische Monitoring bedrohter Arten genutzt. In beiden Arbeitsbereichen werden sowohl Grundlagenforschung wie auch anwendungsorientierte Forschung betrieben.

Darüber hinaus wird mit dem international eingebundenen Rhein-Main-Observatorium ein großflächiges biologisches Langzeit-Monitoring zur Messung von Veränderungen der Artenvielfalt in Raum und Zeit betrieben.
