Das große Insektensterben

Auch häufige Arten verschwinden


Nachrichten vom Insektensterben und seinen möglichen Folgen haben die Öffentlichkeit in letzter Zeit erschüttert. Senckenbergs Insektenkundler beschäftigen sich schon lange mit diesem Problem – und sie wissen auch, was getan werden muss.

Fluch und Segen der intensiven Landwirtschaft

Mitteleuropa hat sich noch nie so nachhaltig und schnell verändert wie seit Mitte des letzten Jahrhunderts. Der Wohlstand wuchs fast kontinuierlich, vieles ist relativ gesehen billiger geworden, insbesondere unsere Lebensmittel. Grund dafür war auch eine immense Erhöhung der landwirtschaftlichen Produktivität. Flurbereinigungen führten zu immer größeren zusammenhängenden Flächen. Die Bewirtschaftung der Felder wurde – mithilfe von künstlichem Dünger und Pflanzenschutzmitteln – immer intensiver. Der Wunsch, vermehrt auf nachwachsende Rohstoffe für die Energieversorgung zu setzen, verschärfte den Druck auf die Flächen nochmals und leitete eine weitere Intensivierungswelle ein, die zum Beispiel in Teilen Deutschlands zu einer dramatischen „Vermaisung“ der Landschaft führte. Das musste längerfristig auf Kosten der biologischen Vielfalt gehen. Spätestens seit der berühmt gewordenen „Krefelder Studie“ ist es nun „amtlich“:Die Menge der Insekten in der Agrarlandschaft hat in den letzten 30 Jahren dramatisch abgenommen, vermutlich um rund 75 Prozent. Senckenberg-Wissenschaftler*innen konnten zusammen mit Kolleg*innen aus München, Salzburg und Thorn zeigen, dass Vielfalt und Anzahl von Tagfaltern in hohem Maß davon abhängen, wie viele Felder in der Nähe mit Pestiziden behandelt wurden. Waren Wiesenflächen fast ganz von pestizidbehandelten Agrarflächen umgeben, so lag die Artenzahl etwa bei der Hälfte und die Individuenzahl nur bei einem Drittel dessen, was sich auf Wiesen fand, die gänzlich von  natur nahen Flächen ohne Pestizideinsatz umgeben waren.

Ökologische Ursachen des Insektensterbens

Auf Basis des vorhandenen Wissens haben Senckenberg-Wissenschaftler*innen deshalb zusammen mit Kolleg*innen aus Salzburg und Stellenbosch die wesentlichen Gründe für den aktuellen Insektenrückgang zusammengetragen. Ein Faktor, der den massiven Rückgang vieler ökologisch anspruchsvoller Arten maßgeblich mitverursacht, ist der dramatische Verlust an hochwertigen Lebens räumen wie blütenreichen Wiesen und Weiden. Dadurch und wegen der vielerorts weiter wachsenden Nutzungsintensität in der Feldflur nimmt die „Durchlässigkeit“ der Normallandschaft für Tiere weiter ab, es kommt zu einer Verinselung der Habitate. Das verhindert die spätere Wiederbesiedlung und zerstört die sogenannte Metapopulationsstruktur; mit der Konsequenz eines weiteren, schleichenden Artenverlusts auf diesen Flächen. Zusätzlich stehen viele Arten in den verbleibenden ökologisch hochwertigen Flächen durch abnehmende Habitatqualität (u. a. durch Randeffekte, unzureichende oder nicht angepasste Pflegekonzepte, Einträge von Stickstoff) immer mehr unter Druck. Die Nutzungsintensivierungen in der Normallandschaft führen zu weiteren Rückgängen, von denen auch eigentlich häufige und anspruchslose Arten betroffen sind. Sie verschwinden zwar nicht völlig, sind aber viel seltener als früher. Außerdem kommen etliche Arten anscheinend nicht mit den sich verändernden klimatischen Bedingungen zurecht und verschwinden in für sie klimatisch ungünstiger werdenden Gebieten mehr und mehr, vor allem wenn die sonstigen ökologischen Rahmenbedingungen sich ebenfalls negativ entwickeln.

Wie können wir das Insektensterben stoppen?

  • Verbliebene Flächen hoher ökologischer Qualität unbedingt erhalten und angemessen pflegen.
  • Degradierte Flächen wieder zu hochwertigen Flächen entwickeln.
  • Durchlässigkeit der Normallandschaft wieder verbessern.
  • Stickstoff- und Pestizidbelastungen verringern.
  • Extensivierung und Ökologisierung der Landnutzung ist zwingend erforderlich.
  • Um den Klimawandel, der sich ebenfalls auf die Insektengemeinschaften auswirkt, mittelfristig zu stoppen, muss auf eine möglichst zügige Reduktion klimawirksamer Emissionen hingearbeitet werden.

Bei einer sofortigen, konsequenten Umsetzung dieser Maßnahmen können wir hoffen, in Mitteleuropa ein reiches Insektenleben zurückzugewinnen. Der Weg dorthin ist nicht einfach und erfordert als gesamtgesellschaftliche Aufgabe die konstruktive Mitarbeit aller Akteur*innen; aber es ist ein lohnendes Unterfangen.
