Forschungsschwerpunkt: Evolutionsbiologie der Amphibien und Reptilien Lateinamerikas und Südostasiens.
Gunther Köhler schloss das Studium der Tiermedizin an der Universität Gießen 1993 mit dem Staatsexamen ab. 1995 promovierte er im Fachbereich Biologie an der Goethe Universität Frankfurt mit einer Dissertation über die Ökologie und Systematik der Schwarzleguane (Gattung Ctenosaura). Im Dezember 1995 übernahm er seine heutige Position als Kustos der Sektion Herpetologie am Senckenberg Research Institute, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. 2009 habilitierte er sich im Fachbereich Biowissenschaften an der Goethe Universität Frankfurt mit einer evolutionsbiologischen Arbeit über Mittelamerikanische Anolis mit Focus auf kryptischen Arten, Hybridisierungen und Artbildungsprozessen. April 2017 wurde er APL Professor an der Goethe Universität Frankfurt. Von März bis Mai 2020 ist er als Gastprofessor an der Chulalongkorn University (Department of Biology, Faculty of Science), Bangkok, Thailand.
Seine herpetologische Forschung konzentriert sich auf die Neotropis, vor allem Mittelamerika und Mexiko, sowie auf Südostasien, hier mit Schwerpunkt Myanmar und Thailand. Köhler hat, meistens mit Coautoren, 28 Bücher und 245 wissenschaftliche Artikel über Amphibien und Reptilien veröffentlicht.
Seine Feldforschung begann 1988 mit einer ersten Reise nach Costa Rica. Seitdem ist er für zahllose Expeditionen nach Lateinamerika zurückgekehrt. In den 1990er Jahren arbeitete er vor allen in Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala und El Salvador, um dann in den letzten beiden Jahrzehnten seine Feldforschung schwerpunktmäßig in Mexiko, Costa Rica, Panama, der Dominikanischen Republik und Paraguay durchzuführen. Erst vor kurzem hat er sein geografisches Interessengebiet nach Südostasien erweitert und seit 2017 mehrere Expeditionen nach Myanmar und Thailand durchgeführt. Neben Lateinamerika und Südostasien, hat Dr. Köhler auch im Iran, Europa und auf den Kapverdischen Inseln herpetologische Aktivitäten entfaltet.
In praktisch allen Ländern, die er besucht hat, entdeckte Dr. Köhler zahlreiche neue Arten (s. Tabelle unten). Zudem hat er durch eine Vielzahl ökologischer Beobachtungen und Felddaten den Wissensstand über die Biologie vieler Arten deutlich erweitern können.
Die fundamentale Frage, die Köhler interessiert, ist “Wie viele und welche Reptilien- und Amphibienarten kommen an einem bestimmten Ort vor und was sind die Prozesse, die zur heutigen Diversität an diesem Ort geführt haben?” Dadurch, dass man Daten und Kenntnisse über die Diversität und Taxonomie der Herpetofauna von vielen Lokalitäten in große Datensätze bringt, wird es möglich, größere zoogeografische und phylogeografische Muster zu analysieren und zu verstehen. Zu seinen Forschungsinteressen zählt auch die Nutzung und Anwendung von Geographic Information Systems (GIS), um Muster von Artbildung und Endemismus zu erkunden.
Besonders intensiv hat Köhler sich mit Saumfingerechsen, also Anolis im weiteren Sinne (Familie Dactyloidae) beschäftigt. Er hat zahlreiche Artikel über die Taxonomie von Anolis publiziert und bislang 54 neue Arten dieser Echsen beschrieben. Er entdeckte eine unerwartet große interspezifische Variation in der Ausprägung der männlichen Kopulationsorgane (Hemipenes, singular: Hemipenis) bei Anolis, die zur Entdeckung und Beschreibung zahlreicher kryptischer Artenpaare und –komplexe geführt hat, also Arten, die sich drastisch in ihrer Hemipenismorphologie, aber nur minimal in ihrer Externmorphologie unterscheiden. Diese Beobachtungen führten zu einem gesteigerten Interesse an den treibenden Kräften und Mechanismen der Artbildungsprozesse in dieser Echsengruppe, was letztendlich zu einem integrativen Ansatz unter Einbeziehung von Daten aus der Extern- und Genitalmorphologie sowie der Molekulargenetik führte.
Als Kustos fördert Köhler die Vergrößerung und weitere Erschließung der herpetologischen Sammlung (SMF) und des mit dieser Sammlung assoziierten Materials am Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg Frankfurt. Seine eigenen Aufsammlungen aus Lateinamerika und Südostasien, insgesamt mehr als 8000 konservierte Amphibien und Reptilien sowie eine große Kryosammlung von Gewebeproben für genetische Studien, sind Teil der Senckenberg-Sammlungen.
Köhlers Lehre an der Goethe University Frankfurt beinhaltet Kurse sowohl im Bachelor- als auch im Master-Studiengang, mit Modulen zur Integrativen Biodiversitätsforschung in der Zoologie und zur Diversität der Organismen. Er macht regelmäßig Führungen durch die Sektion Herpetologie und hält öffentliche Vorträge über sein Forschungsgebiet. Seit seinem Beginn bei Senckenberg gibt es einen steten Zustrom an Herpetologie interessierten Studenten von diversen Universitäten, vor allem aber von der Goethe Universität Frankfurt, zur Arbeitsgruppe Köhler, und zahlreiche Diplom-, Bachelor-, Master- und Doktorarbeiten wurden unter seiner Betreuung angefertigt. Die in Köhlers Labor tätigen Studenten sind oftmals Coautoren der resultierenden Veröffentlichungen und nehmen auch an der Feldforschung teil, in Deutschland wie auch in den Tropen.
