Biodiversität und Erdsystemdynamik


Vor rund 100 Jahren hielt Alfred Wegener seinen berühmten Vortrag zur Kontinentaldrift und zur Entstehung der Kontinente im Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt. Noch heute ist die Dynamik des Systems Erde ein wichtiger Forschungsschwerpunkt Senckenbergs. Welche Rolle spielten und spielen die geodynamischen Prozesse unseres Planeten bei der Entwicklung des Lebens? Dieser Frage nachzuspüren, ist die Kernaufgabe der Geowissenschaften bei Senckenberg.

Seit Wegeners bahnbrechenden Ideen haben die Geowissenschaften die entscheidende Rolle bei der Erforschung der Entstehung der Planeten und der Entwicklung des Lebens gespielt. Ebenso wichtig sind sie, um Naturgefahren einzuschätzen, fossile und mineralische Ressourcen zu bewerten und die Klimageschichte zu charakterisieren. Geowissenschaftliche Forschung umfasst heute nicht mehr nur die Kruste, den Mantel und den Kern unseres Planeten, sondern vor allem deren vielfältige Wechselwirkungen mit der Atmosphäre, der Biosphäre und der Hydrosphäre. Die Wissenschaftler*innen betrachten dabei Zeitspannen, die sowohl die Entstehung und Entwicklung unseres Planeten als auch die Evolution des Menschen mit einschließen.

Dynamisch: Das System Erde

Senckenberg versucht, das dynamische System Erde zu beschreiben und den Ansprüchen einer zunehmend interdisziplinären Naturwissenschaft gerecht zu werden. Dazu haben wir unsere Forschung auf drei Kernthemen fokussiert: 

  • Die Interaktion zwischen Erdoberfläche und Biosphäre
  • Die Entwicklung der Erde und ihrer Paläoumweltbedingungen
  • Die Entwicklung des Menschen im Zuge ausgeprägter Klimaschwankungen der letzten Millionen Jahre

Vielseitige Forschunsmethoden

Eine der Stärken einer interdisziplinären Einrichtung wie Senckenberg liegt in der Methodenvielfalt: Die Forscher*innen nutzen innovative analytische Herangehensweisen wie zum Beispiel die Isotopengeochemie oder die 3D-Computertomografie. Zugleich nutzen und erhalten sie die geowissenschaftlichen Sammlungen und Forschungsstationen wie das UNESCO-Welterbe Messel mit seinen einzigartigen Fossilien. Auf diese Weise konnte Senckenberg zum Beispiel nachweisen, dass vor 47 Millionen Jahren anomale Wassererwärmungen im Pazifik, „El Niño“ genannt, Einfluss auf das Klima und die Entwicklung der Ökosysteme in Zentraleuropa nahmen.

The Mulch lab at the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre and Goethe University Frankfurt uses state-of-the-art isotope geochemical approaches including novel applications of clumped isotope thermometry and molecular biomarker analysis to track changes in temperature and precipitation based on geologic materials such as paleosoils, fossil teeth or minerals in the Earth’s crust that store information about near surface meteoric waters in active deformation zones of our planet.

Collectively, these data permit reconstructions of the change in elevation of mountain belts through time and their role in guiding atmospheric moisture transport over continents or provide cornerstones in establishing the interactions of biotic and abiotic drivers of speciation and evolution in the highly diverse mountainous regions of e.g. the Andes and the Himalayas.
