FORSCHUNGSINTERESSEN

Schwerpunkt: Phylogenie, Zoogeografie, Morphologie, Ökologie und Systematik der Bombycoidea, speziell der Familien Saturniidae, Brahmaeidae, Eupterotidae und Bombycidae weltweit (weitere Informationen siehe auch auf der Forschungsseite der Sektion Entomologie II von Senckenberg sowie auf der privaten Seite über Saturniidae). Zoogeografie und Faunistik dieser Familien, speziell in der Paläarktis und in Südostasien.  Als notwendige Grundlage dazu auch Alpha- und Betasystematik der untersuchten Gruppen (Neubeschreibungen und Revisionen).

Darüber hinaus Studien an der hessischen Schmetterlingsfauna (weitere Informationen siehe auf der Seite über die Hessische Landessammlung Lepidoptera sowie allgemein auf der Seite über die Arbeitsgemeinschaft Hessischer Lepidopterologen.)

Weiter im Urlaub (zusammen mit einigen Freunden) langjährige (seit 1970) Studien zur Schmetterlingsfaunistik in den Südalpen in einem begrenzten Gebiet in Osttirol und Kärnten (Österreich: Tiroler Gailtal und Lesachtal und umgebende Bergketten) in Kooperation mit dem Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum, Innsbruck, und den Kärntner Naturschutzbehörden.

Im Rahmen des Zoologie-Hauptstudiums an der J.-W.-Goethe-Uni Frankfurt am Main führe ich in den Wintersemestern im Praktikum: „Phylogenie und Diversität der Tiere“ den eintägigen Kurs „Lepidoptera“ (Vorlesung und Praktikum) durch.

SONSTIGE AKTIVITÄTEN
Seit 1976 Mitglied in der Senckenbergischen Naturforschenden Gesellschaft, Frankfurt am Main. 
Seit 1979 Mitglied im Entomologischen Verein Apollo e. V., Frankfurt am Main; dort seit 1980 zunehmende Übernahme von Verantwortung in der Redaktion und Mitarbeit beim Aufbau der entomologischen Fachzeitschrift Nachrichten des Entomologischen Vereins Apollo (NEVA). Seit etwa 1985 faktisch, seit September 1990 auch offiziell Schriftleiter der NEVA.
1985 Gründungsmitglied der Arbeitsgemeinschaft Hessischer Lepidopterologen (Arge HeLep) im I.E.V. (Internationaler Entomologischer Verein e.V.). 1997 (nach dem unerwarteten Tod des Gründungsleiters Philipp Michael Kristal) zu einem der vier Sprecher der Arge gewählt. Verhandlungen und Kooperation mit den hessischen Naturschutzbehörden und dem zuständigen Ministerium. — Seit Ende 1995 Integration der Arbeit der Arge HeLep in die Sektion Entomologie II von Senckenberg und dort Aufbau der Hessischen Landessammlung Lepidoptera.

Fachspezifischer beruflicher Werdegang:

Während der Unijahre jahrelange Tätigkeit als studentische und wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft, insbesondere im Zoologischen Großpraktikum, Teil Systematische Zoologie.
Seit 1. Dezember 1995 bin ich wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Forschungsinstitut und Naturmuseum Senckenberg in Frankfurt am Main und dort zuständig für die Leitung der Sektion Entomologie II. 
Im Juli 1998 übernahm ich die Schriftleiterfunktion bei einer der senckenbergischen biologischen Fachzeitschriften, der Senckenbergiana biologica. Dieses Amt habe/hatte ich inne bis Ende 2008, bis zur Einstellung der Zeitschrift im Rahmen einer Umgestatung der gesamten wissenschaftlichen Publikationsorgane Senckenbergs.
Aktivitäten in Faunistik und Naturschutz:

Seit Mitte der 1980er Jahre habe ich mich in der Faunistik im weiteren Bereich rund um meinen langjährigen Wohnsitz in Mühlheim am Main beziehungsweise rund um Frankfurt am Main (unter anderem auch in Kooperation mit dem und im Auftrag des Regierungspräsidiums Darmstadt [Obere Naturschutzbehörde]) besonders um die Schmetterlingsfauna einiger Naturschutzgebiete speziell im Kreis Offenbach sowie im Main-Kinzig-Kreis gekümmert (Erfassung und Monitoring der Lepidopterafauna ausgewählter NSGs und von FFH-Gebieten der EU).
Auch ist vorgesehen, meine Daten aus dem Bereich des Frankfurter Stadtwaldes sowie aus dessen Umgebung (Kelsterbacher Wald, Gundwald Mörfelden-Walldorf etc.) als Argumente gegen eine Erweiterung des Frankfurter Flughafens in die unersetzbaren Restgebiete der Wälder rund um den heutigen Flughafenzaun hinein einzusetzen.
Neben vielen nationalen und internationalen Fachgesellschaften und Vereinen der Biologie und Entomologie bin ich auch bei den gesetzlich anerkannten Naturschutzverbänden Nabu, BUND und HGON Mitglied. — Details und weitere Verbindungen zum Thema Naturschutz siehe auch auf der privaten Seite „Naturschutz-Frankfurt“.
November 1997 bis November 2001 war ich für Senckenberg stellvertretendes Mitglied im 5. Naturschutzbeirat, seit Dezember 2001 bin ich Mitglied im 6. und inzwischen 7. Naturschutzbeirat der Stadt Frankfurt am Main.
