Der Fachbereich Epifauna konzentriert sich auf die Lebewesen auf dem oder direkt über dem Meeresboden. Der Schwerpunkt der taxonomischen Forschung liegt auf marinen Isopoden. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt dabei auf der Tiefseefauna.
In unseren Aufgabenbereich fällt die Planung und Durchführung, bzw. Begleitung von Expeditionen und die Sortierung des Probenmaterials aus dem Epibenthosschlitten. Wir koordinieren u.a. Proben von DIVA-2 und 3, ANDEEP, SYSTCO, MANGAN und IceAGE1 und 2.
Bei den von uns begleiteten Expeditionen liegt ein Schwerpunkt auf der Fixierung des Epibenthosschlittenmaterials für genetische Analysen in 96% Ethanol und einer durchgehenden Kühlkette. Peracaride Krebse wie Isopoden, Amphipoden und Tanaidaceen aus Epibenthosschlittenproben der Expeditionen DIVA-2 und 3, ANDEEP-SYSTCO, MANGAN und IceAGE werden im Rahmen unseres Barcoding Projektes bearbeitet.
IceAGE (Icelandic marine Animals: Genetics and Ecology) ist ein internationales Projekt, dass sich mit der Biodiversität des Benthos rund um Island und der angrenzenden Meeresgebiete befasst. Die Expedition IceAGE2 (Pos456) ergänzt den während IceAGE1 (M 85/3) erhobenen Datensatz. Besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf dem hydrographisch hochvariablen Gebiet des Island-Faroer-Rückens in der klimatisch sensitiven Region um Island. Es sollen die Fragen nach (a) den Faktoren, die die benthische Fauna strukturieren und (b) der genetischer Variabilität und deren Ursachen beantwortet werden. Das IceAGE-Projekt kombiniert den Ansatz moderner Taxonomie mit ökologischen Fragestellungen mit Schwerpunkt auf Phylogeographie (Populationsgenetik und DNA Barcoding) und ökologischer Modellierung.
