Research interests

My group works on the evolution of diversity in molluscs and other marine invertebrates. Morphology shapes how each species responds to environmental change, in the modern world and in the fossil record. We often focus on very strange body forms, like bivalved gastropods, or apparently conservative forms, like chitons. We use tomography (right) to visualise animal adaptations in 3D and understand the world from other organisms‘ points of view.

Understanding evolutionary radiations, survivorship, and the way animals respond to environmental change, require high resolution data from multiple disciplines, and the research infrastructure in museum collections. The work in my research group crosses genetics, morphology, anatomy, neurobiology, physiology, computational modelling, and experimental approaches, to understand species diversity.

Some of these are discussed in my recent book, What Species Mean: A User’s Guide to the Units of Biodiversity, published by CRC/Taylor & Francis in early 2018.

Molluscs are among nature’s greatest innovators, representing some of the most ancient and evolutionary successful animal radiations, with tremendous diversity in morphology, behavior, and lifestyle. What molecular mechanisms and driving forces produce such great adaptability and diversity? How are novel genes and functions generated, and how do different reproductive strategies and selection affect genetic diversity (genomic heterozygosity), adaptations, and population genomics? These questions fascinate me, and I look forward to finding answers from the Book of Life by ATGC.

Molluscan species have always fascinated me, from the gastropods that inhabit our gardens to the remarkably intelligent and agile cephalopods. The vast array of body morphologies within this group has evolved to suit various marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. Delving into their world, one can encounter a broad range of creatures, such as bivalved gastropods, tubular bivalves, worm snails, and numerous other peculiarities.

It is precisely due to this diversity that my primary passion lies in studying the anatomical adaptations of these remarkable organisms. To explore their intricacies, I employ cutting-edge techniques such as 3D reconstruction based on histology and tomography, along with the traditional method of gross dissection.

Research Interests

The focus of my research is the phylogeny, biogeography, palaeontology, taxonomy and ecology of terrestrial microgastropods, and especially those belonging to the Carychiidae and Hypselostomatidae. My work emphasises an integrative taxonomic approach including CT and SEM investigation of shells, molecular analyses and histology. Ecological investigation delves into their superficial subterranean and subterranean habitats. A large scale revision of the ellobiid family Carychiidae is in progress.

Collection

The private collection of H. Nordsieck includes only European Clausiliidae. Non-European Clausiliidae received from collectors in Asia and South America for that collection are deposited in the Senckenberg-Museum Frankfurt.
The collection of European Clausiliidae consists of a shell collection and a soft-part collection with a collection of genital preparations. It includes the samples collected in the own research travels and those received from other collectors by exchange or in connection with determinations and revisions. For the samples collected in the research travels until 1978 a catalogue of localities with biotope informations exists.
The collection is housed in the
Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart; parts of the shell samples collected since 1972 are deposited in the Senckenberg-Museum Frankfurt. The material collected since 2001 is largely deposited in the Senckenberg Research Institute Frankfurt.
