Die Ausgrabungen an der frühpleistozänen Wirbeltierfundstelle Untermassfeld erstreckten sich über insgesamt 127 Monate. Dabei konnten mehr als 18.000 bestimmbare paläontologische Funde geborgen werden. Unter Leitung von R.-D. Kahlke wurde das reichhaltige Fundgut konserviert und von einem fachlich weit gefächerten internationalen Forscherteam untersucht. 

Teil 5 der Untermassfeld-Monographie vervollständigt die Serie von Beschreibungen und Auswertungen der Untermassfelder Grabungsfunde. Neben der Analyse pathologischer Merkmale an einem Bison-Skelettelement werden zahlreiche neue Ergebnisse zu Wildschweinen, Elefanten, Bären und Riesenhyänen sowie der von ihnen am Fundgut reichlich hinterlassenen Knochenmodifikationen vorgestellt. Ein umfangreicher Beitrag ist einzigartigen Neufunden aller sechs von Untermassfeld bekannten Großkatzenarten gewidmet. Zudem werden Kleinsäuger-Reste, darunter zahlreiche spektakuläre Skelette, und neue Makaken-Reste diskutiert. Eine Synopse der Forschungsergebnisse zu Fundstellenentstehung, Paläobiodiversität, taphonomischer Charakteristik, Landschaftsrekonstruktion sowie zur Chronostratigraphie und zur Bedeutung der Untermassfelder Fauna für die Kenntnis der westpaläarktischen Faunengeschichte während des Quartärs vervollständigen die fünfbändige Monographie. Die als großformatige Foldouts beigefügten Grabungpläne der Fossillagerstätte runden das Bild ab.

Die anlässlich des 50. Gründungsjubiläums der Senckenberg Forschungsstation für Quartärpaläontologie Weimar vorgelegte Bibliographie zeichnet den Werdegang der international wirksamen Institution über ein halbes Jahrhundert wechselvoller Geschichte nach. Ein Reigen von Einzelveröffentlichungen und Monographien illustriert den Wandel von Schwerpunkten und Strategien quartärpaläontologischer Forschung.

Quartärpaläontologische Forschung in Weimar 1962-2011. Eine Bibliographie.

Das vorliegende Themenheft gibt einen Einblick in die Arbeit der Senckenberg Forschungsstation für Quartärpaläontologie in Weimar, die in Schlüsselregionen vornehmlich der Nordhemissphäre der Erde international vernetzte Forschungsprojekte vorantreibt.

Mit dem Erscheinen des zweiten Bandes Late Neogene and Quaternary biodiversity and evolution liegen die Proceedings der 18. Internationalen Senckenberg-Konferenz, einer im Jahre 2004 unter hochrangiger internationaler Beteiligung in Weimar ausgerichteten Veranstaltung, nunmehr vollständig in publizierter Form vor. Nicht weniger als 117 Autoren widmen sich aktuellen quartärpaläontologischen Forschungsthemen zahlreicher Regionen der Nordhemisphäre sowie südlicher Schlüsselgebiete unserer Erde.
Der vorliegende Band komplettiert die Arbeiten zur Faunengeschichte Europas mit Beiträgen zu Italien, Bulgarien, Spanien, Frankreich, Deutschland, Dänemark, Kroatien und Portugal (mit jeweiligen korrelativen Verknüpfungen). Außereuropäische Studien widmen sich der pleistozänen Tier- und Pflanzenwelt Westsibiriens, Chinas, Indonesiens, Mexikos und Südamerikas. Studien zur endpleistozän-frühholozänen Fragmentation von Mammuthabitaten sowie zum Modus des Aussterbens spätquartärer Großsäugerfaunen Eurasiens beschließen den über mehr als drei Millionen Jahre gespannten zeitlich Bogen einer erfolgreichen Senckenberg-Konferenz.

Aus der 1978 entdeckten spätunterpleistozänen Wirbeltierfundstelle von Untermaßfeld bei Meiningen (Südthüringen) wurde während mehr als 25 Grabungskampagnen eine unglaubliche Vielfalt fossiler Wirbeltierreste aus gesichertem stratigraphischem Kontext geborgen. Mit rund 14.000 bestimmbaren Präparaten liegt inzwischen das umfangreichste Vertebratenmaterial der westlichen Paläarktis aus der Zeitspanne zwischen 1,2 und 0,9 Ma BP vor. Damit avanciert Untermaßfeld zu einer quartärpaläontologischen Schlüsselfundstelle Europas. Ralf-Dietrich Kahlke legt in der Monographie eine aktuelle Zusammenschau der bisher zu Untermaßfeld erzielten Ergebnisse vor und stellt diese in überregionale faunengeschichtliche Zusammenhänge.

Vom 25. bis 30. April 2004 wurde die 18. Internationale Senckenberg-Konferenz (VI International Palaeontological Colloquium Weimar) unter dem Titel Late Neogene and Quaternary biodiversity and evolution: Regional developments and interregional correlations von der Senckenberg-Forschungsstation für Quartärpaläontologie in Weimar ausgerichtet. Auf dieser Tagung, die Hans-Dietrich Kahlke, einem der führenden Forscherpersönlichkeiten der interdisziplinären quartärpaläontologischen Forschung Eurasiens, gewidmet war, präsentierten 165 Wissenschaftler aus 28 Ländern ihre Forschungsarbeiten zur Evolutionsgeschichte der spätneogenen und quartären Flora und Fauna in Europa, Asien, Afrika und Amerika. Der erste Proceedingsband enthält vornehmlich Beiträge zur Entwicklungsgeschichte plio-pleistozäner Säugetiergruppen sowie Arbeiten zu spätneogen-quartären Faunen des europäischen Raumes.

Die Autoren Ralf-Dietrich Kahlke und Dick Mol, Teilnehmer der internationalen Cerpolex/Mammuthus-Polarexpeditionen auf der sibirischen Tajmyr-Halbinsel, schildern neueste Entdeckungen eiszeitlicher Lebensreste weit nördlich des Polarkreises. Es werden während monatelanger Geländekampagnen unter unwirtlichen klimatischen Bedingungen geborgene Neufunde vorgestellt und in überregionale Zusammenhänge der Eiszeitpaläontologie eingeordnet. Darüber hinaus berichten die Autoren über die Strategie der technisch hoch gerüsteten Expeditionen, mittels Helikopter und Booten neue Fundstellen aufzuspüren, sowie über die Aufbewahrung und Auswertung der Fossilien in tief gefrorenem Zustand unter Tage. Dabei kombinieren sie eine Fülle von zum Teil hier erstmals publizierten Informationen mit der Reflexion persönlicher Expeditionserlebnisse und dem Nachzeichnen von Lokalkolorit der sibirischen Arktis. Zahlreiche dem Band beigegebene Illustrationen unterstützen dieses Anliegen und vermitteln darüber hinaus einen Eindruck der unvergleichlichen Schönheit heutiger Tundrenlandschaften.

Ende April 2004 fand in Weimar die 18. Internationale Senckenberg-Konferenz (zugleich das VI. Weimarer Paläontologische Kolloquium) statt, die dem 80. Geburtstag Hans-Dietrich Kahlkes, dem Gründer des 1962 geschaffenen Instituts für Quartärpaläontologie und Ausrichter des I.-V. Weimarer Paläontologischen Kolloquiums, gewidmet war. In 117 Beiträge lieferten 193 Autoren neue Ergebnisse zu paläontologischen, geologischen und archäologischen Forschungen im Neogen und Quartär Eurasiens, Afrikas sowie Nord- und Südamerikas. Die Beiträge, deren erweiterte Zusammenfassungen in diesem Band vorgelegt werden, behandelten folgende Themenkomplexe:
– Generelle und regionale Evolution spezieller Fossilgruppen
– Regionale Entwicklungen und überregionale (z. T. interkontinentale) Korrelationen fossiler Faunen, Floren und Paläoökosysteme
– Innovative Methoden in der Paläobiologie, Paläoökologie und Taphonomie

Die Beiträge des Conference Volume sind in englischer Sprache verfasst und verfügen über zahlreiche Abbildungen und Literaturverzeichnisse. Eine vollständige Bibliographie mit farbigen Abbildungen gibt einen Überblick über das wissenschaftliche Werk H.-D. Kahlkes.

Im Laufe des 6. Jahrtausends v. Chr. vollzog sich in Mitteleuropa die sogenannte neolithische Revolution. Die Kultur der damit auftretenden ersten Ackerbauern und Viehzüchter Zentraleuropas wird nach den Verzierungen auf entsprechender Keramik als „Bandkeramische Kultur“ bezeichnet. Während gut untersuchte Siedlungsfunde dieser Kultur in größerer Zahl vorliegen, zählen vollständig ausgewertete bandkeramische Gräberfelder noch immer zu den außerordentlichen Seltenheiten. Mit den Dokumentationen der von H.-D. Kahlke systematisch ergrabenen und ausgewerteten thüringischen Gräberfeldern von Sondershausen und Bruchstedt treten nunmehr zwei weitere derartige Fundstellen der älteren Linienbandkeramik hinzu. Sie schließen dabei eine seit langem klaffende Kenntnislücke zu den zeitlich anschließenden Gräberfeldern der jüngeren Linienbandkeramik in anderen Gebieten Deutschlands, der Slowakei, der Niederlande und Frankreichs.

Sondershausen und Bruchstedt: Zwei Gräberfelder mit älterer Linienbandkeramik in Thüringen.

In 16 aktuellen Beiträgen wird die geologisch-paläontologische Entwicklungsgeschichte Thüringens während des Tertiärs und Quartärs, insbesondere seine neogene und pleistozäne Landschaftsentwicklung, die Paläogen-Stratigraphie des Landes, das Tertiär zwischen Leipzig und Altenburg sowie der Basaltvulkanismus der thüringischen Rhön behandelt. Fünf aufeinander abgestimmte paläontologische Studien beschreiben mehr als 70 wesentliche Fossilfundstellen des thüringischen Pliozäns und Quartärs, gegliedert nach Vorkommen von Mikro- und Makrofloren, Mollusken, Insekten sowie Klein- und Großsäugetieren. Weitere Beiträge sind den Zersatzgrobschottern des Unterpleistozäns, den eemzeitlichen Burgtonnaer Süßwasserkalken, weichselzeitlichen Sedimenten des Ilm- und des Saaletales, dem Subrosionsgeschehen vom Spätpleistozän bis in historische Zeit sowie quartären Massenverlagerungen an der Wellenkalk-Schichtstufe gewidmet.

Das Bildwerk eröffnet Einblicke in die faszinierende Tier- und Pflanzenwelt des Eiszeitalters. Auf meisterhaft gestalteten Blättern werden beeindruckende Tier- und Pflanzenfunde aus dem Eiszeitalter vorgestellt. Neben außergewöhnlichen, von Präparatoren freigelegten, paläontologischen Funden sind Grabungsbilder, aktuelle Rekonstruktionen der entsprechenden Tierarten oder Aufnahmen noch heute lebender verwandter Formen abgebildet. Verständliche Erläuterungstexte zu allen Funden ergänzen die Bilder.

R.-D. KAHLKE:
Fossilien des Eiszeitalters. Einblicke in die Naturgeschichte Europas.

Vom 12. bis 17.05.2002 organisierte die Britische Quartärvereinigung (Quaternary Research Association) gemeinsam mit der Senckenberg-Forschungsstation für Quartärpaläontologie Weimar eine Exkursionsveranstaltung zu den wichtigsten Quartärfundstellen Thüringens und angrenzender Gebiete. Neben ausführlichen Darstellungen der einzelnen Exkursionspunkte (Untermaßfeld, Ehringsdorf, Burgtonna, Bilzingsleben u.a.) liefert der Band eine aktuelle Übersicht zu den Fundstellen (mit umfassendem Literaturverzeichnis) und zur Entwicklung der wichtigsten Fossilgruppen (Mikro- und Makrofloren, Mollusken, Insekten sowie Klein- und Großsäugetiere) im Quartär Thüringens.

Alle Beiträge sind in englischer Sprache verfasst und verfügen über ein umfangreiches Literaturverzeichnis.

R. A. MEYRICK & D. C. SCHREVE (Hrsg.):
The Quaternary of Central Germany (Thuringia & Surroundings). Field Guide.

Teil 3 der Monographie enthält die Bearbeitungen des spektakulären Feliden-Materials von Untermassfeld, das Jaguar, Gepard, Puma, Luchs sowie Dolch- und Säbelzahnkatze umfasst. In dem reich illustrierten Band sind Untersuchungsergebnisse zu Insektenfressern, Hasenartigen und Nagetieren, Studien zu Herbivoren-Osteophagie und zu Kleinsäuger-Nagespuren sowie Ergebnisse von Paläotemperatur-Bestimmungen enthalten. Es schließt sich eine umfangreiche Darstellung der Entstehungsgeschichte des Fossilvorkommens sowie der Paläoökologie und Biostratigraphie des Frühpleistozäns von Untermaßfeld an. Beigegeben sind 15 Grabungspläne zur Dokumentation der über mehr als zwei Jahrzehnte geführten Grabungsarbeiten.

In Fortsetzung des 1997 erschienenen Teils 1 der Monographie werden in Teil 2 neue Forschungsergebnisse einer internationalen Arbeitsgruppe (Koordination R.-D. Kahlke) zur frühpleistozänen Fossilfundstelle Untermassfeld behandelt. Der Band beinhaltet die Forschungsgeschichte 1989 bis 1996 sowie Abhandlungen zum geologischen Bau des Vorkommens sowie zur Entstehung der ungewöhnlichen Anreichung von Skelettresten, zur Methodik der osteologischen Präparation und Konservierung, zu Cerviden-Neufunden und Hippopotamus-Schädelresten, außerdem die Bearbeitungen des Gesamtmaterials der Rhinocerotiden, Equiden, Elephantiden, Caniden, Ursiden, Musteliden und Hyaeniden sowie entsprechender Funde von Koprolithen.

Die wiederum reich bebilderten Beiträge sind in deutscher oder englischer Sprache verfasst, sie verfügen jeweils über eine ausführliche englische Zusammenfassung.

Die Monographie behandelt die Entstehungs-, Entwicklungs- und Verbreitungsgeschichte kälteangepasster Großsäugetierarten Eurasiens vom Frühen Pliozän bis zum Ende des Pleistozäns. Vor dem Hintergrund der Herausbildung der eurasischen Steppentundra – der sogenannten Mammutsteppe – wird die Genese einer Faunenvergesellschaftung nachgezeichnet, die in die Fachliteratur als Mammuthus-Coelodonta-Faunenkomplex eingegangen ist. In seiner Maximalausdehung überspannt er etwa 190 Längen- und 40 Breitengrade der nördlichen Hemisphäre. Basierend auf umfangreichem Datenmaterial, u. a. aus Europa, Sibirien und China, legt der Autor zahlreiche Verbreitungskarten zu den Arealen der charakteristischen kälteangepassten Großsäugetierarten im Oberen Pleistozän der Alten Welt vor.

The History of the Origin, Evolution and Dispersal of the Late Pleistocene Mammuthus-Coelodonta Faunal Complex in Eurasia (Large Mammals).

Die überaus fundreiche frühpleistozäne Wirbeltierlagerstätte Untermassfeld wurde von einer weit gefächerten internationalen Arbeitsgruppe (Koordination R.-D. Kahlke) geowissenschaftlich und paläontologisch untersucht. Teil 1 der mehrteiligen monographischen Bearbeitung behandelt die Geschichte der Erforschung des Fossilvorkommens und seiner Umgebung sowie Beiträge zur Geologie und Paläomagnetik der Fundstelle selbst, zur Mollusken-Fauna und zu den aufgefundenen Resten von Fischen, Amphibien, Schildkröten und Vögeln. Behandelt werden zudem überaus reiche Funde von Boviden, Cerviden, Flusspferden und Wildschweinen. Der Gesamtbefund der Grabungsergebnisse (Geologie, Paläozoologie, Taphonomie, Paläoökologie, Stratigraphie) rundet die Darstellung ab.

Die sämtlich reich illustrierten Beiträge sind in deutscher, englischer oder französischer Sprache verfasst, sie verfügen jeweils über eine ausführliche englische Zusammenfassung.

Mit der vorgelegten Abhandlung publizierte der Oberpräparator der Senckenberg-Forschungsstation für Quartärpaläontologie seine über Jahre gesammelten Erfahrungen bei der konsolidierenden Erhaltung von Altpräparaten eiszeitlicher Wirbeltierreste. Überdies werden anhand der Konzentratlagerstätte Untermaßfeld in Südthüringen exemplarisch die fachgerechten Freilegung, Gewinnung und Konservierung neuer pleistozäner Knochenfunde erläutert. Aus dem Inhalt: Bergungsmethodik (Freilegung, Vorkonservierung, Dokumentation), Imprägnierungstechnik (historische Entwicklung, moderne Methoden), Klebetechnik (Epoxidharze, Cyanacrylate), In situ-Präparate, Transfermethoden, Ultraschallpräparation.

In der Monographie ist die Entstehungs-, Entwicklungs- und Verbreitungsgeschichte kälteangepasster Großsäugetierarten Eurasiens vom Frühen Pliozän bis zum Ende des Pleistozäns dargestellt. Im Blickpunkt der Arbeit steht die Genese des sogenannten Mammuthus-Coelodonta-Faunenkomplexes, der sich im Zusammenhang mit der Entstehung der kälteangepassten Steppentundren während der quartären Kaltzeiten in Eurasien herausbildete. Der Autor Hans-Dietrich Kahlke gibt einen umfassenden Überblick über die Eiszeitforschung – allgemeinverständlich dargestellt und mit zahlreichen Abbildungen versehen. Das Hauptaugenmerk des Buches liegt auf dem Quartär, dem jüngsten und am intensivsten erforschten Eiszeitalter der Erdgeschichte. Dargestellt werden u.a. die Geschichte der Eiszeitforschung, Erkenntnisse über Ursachen und Auswirkungen von Eiszeiten sowie Spuren, die eine Rekonstruktion vergangener Warm- und Kaltzeiten ermöglichen. Mit einer weltweiten Chronostratigraphie des Quartärs schließt der Autor das Buch ab.
