Klement Tockner, seit 2021 Generaldirektor der Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung, leitet gemeinsam mit dem Direktorium die operativen Geschäfte der Gesellschaft. Sein erklärtes Ziel ist es, durch die im Forschungsprogramm festgeschriebene ganzheitliche Geobiodiversitätsforschung einen zukunftsweisenden Beitrag zur Bewältigung der großen Herausforderungen des Anthropozäns zu leisten.

An den elf Standorten der Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung arbeiten bundesweit rund 950 Senckenberg-Mitarbeiter*innen aus 40 Nationen. Im Dialog mit Akteuren aus Wissenschaft und Praxis erforscht die Senckenberg Gesellschaft mit innovativen Methoden gesamtgesellschaftliche Zukunftsfragen.

Klement Tockners Forschungsinteresse gilt der Dynamik, der Biodiversität und dem nachhaltigen Management von Gewässern. Er forscht an der Schnittstelle verschiedener Disziplinen, wie etwa der Ökologie, der Geomorphologie und der Hydrologie. Dabei kombiniert der gebürtige Österreicher Grundlagenforschung mit anwendungsorientierter Forschung und verknüpft natur- mit sozialwissenschaftlichen Themen. Zudem berät er internationale Forschungseinrichtungen in deren strategischen Entwicklung.

Klement Tockner ist Generaldirektor der Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung und Professor für Ökosystemwissenschaften an der Goethe-Universität, Frankfurt am Main (seit 2021). Er war Präsident des Österreichischen Wissenschaftsfonds FWF (2016–2020), Professor für Aquatische Ökologie an der Freien Universität Berlin (2007–2020) und Direktor des Leibniz Instituts für Gewässerökologie und Binnenfischerei (IGB), Berlin  (2007–2016). Er promovierte in Zoologie und Botanik an der Universität Wien (1993) und erhielt eine Titularprofessur an der ETH Zürich (2005).

Er war Chefredakteur der Zeitschrift Aquatic Sciences (2005–2014) und ist Fachredakteur der Zeitschrift Ecosystems. Er hat rund 250 wissenschaftliche Arbeiten veröffentlicht, darunter mehr als 200 ISI-Artikel. Im Jahr 2009 gab er ein umfassendes Buch über europäische Flüsse heraus („Rivers of Europe“, Elsevier / Academic Press; 2. Auflage im Jahr 2022).

Klement Tockner ist ein international führender Gewässerökologe. Schwerpunkte seiner Forschung sind Biodiversität, Flussgebietsmanagement und die Bedeutung der Wissenschaften für die Gesellschaft. Aktuelle Forschungsschwerpunkte umfassen u.a. die Ökologie trockenfallender Flüsse, die Konsequenzen großtechnischer Infrastrukturprojekte (z. B. Dämme, Wasserumleitungen) weltweit sowie die Koppelung der biologischen und der kulturellen Vielfalt.

Klement Tockner hat erfolgreich große inter- und transdisziplinäre Projekte wie das von der Europäischen Kommission geförderte Projekt „BioFresh“ geleitet. Er berät wissenschaftliche Einrichtungen weltweit in deren strategischer Entwicklung und ist Mitglied mehrerer Gremien und Beiräte, darunter der Wissenschaftsrat der Bundesregierung Deutschland und der Universitätsrat der Universität Salzburg, Österreich. Er ist gewähltes Mitglied der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina und der Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur Mainz. Für den FWF erhielt er 2019 den Wikimedia Preis für „Freies Wissen“, 2023 wurde er als „National Champion“ des ersten Frontiers Planet Prize (2023) ausgezeichnet.
