Vom Kräuterbruch zum Informationsknoten – Die heimische Flora in Forschung und Anwendung


Herbarien gehören zu den ältesten Sammlungsteilen in Naturmuseen. Senckenbergs ältestes Herbar, ein in Kräuterbuchmanier gebundenes Prunkstück, stammt aus dem Jahr 1677. Im Zuge der Digitalisierung kommen unsere Sammlungen nun nicht nur ans Licht der Öffentlichkeit, sondern auch zu neuen wissenschaftlichen Ehren.

Ab dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert wurden naturhistorische Sammlungen mit Blick auf wissenschaftliche Fragestellungen angelegt und systematisch ausgebaut. Über die Zeit haben sie sich gewandelt, generell sind die Anforderungen an Forschungssammlungen ins gesamt vielfältiger geworden.

Forschen an und mit Herbarien

Im Zentrum der Arbeit steht zwar nach wie vor der traditionelle Herbarbeleg, doch zu den klassischen Untersuchungsmethoden mit Lupe oder Mikroskop sind neuere Ansätze, wie DNA- und Röntgenuntersuchungen, hinzugekommen. Heute interessieren neben taxonomischen Fragestellungen auch angewandte Aspekte, wie z. B. im Naturschutz, wo Veränderungen der Flora im Zusammenhang mit Klima- oder Landnutzungswandel von großem Interesse sind. An den Standorten Frankfurt, Görlitz, Weimar und Wilhelmshaven hält das Herbarium Senckenbergianum große Sammlungen zur Flora von Deutschland. Im Mittelpunkt unserer Arbeit steht die Grundlagenforschung zu Systematik und Evolution, so zu Artengruppen wie Habichtskräutern, Süßgräsern oder aktuell zur Familie der Rosengewächse. Ein wichtiger angewandter Aspekt ist hier die Erstellung von Bestimmungsschlüsseln, insbesondere für taxonomisch schwierige Gruppen. Daneben ist die Floristik, also die Erfassung und Dokumentation von Vorkommen wichtiger Arten, eine zentrale Aufgabe. Herbarbelege sind hier nach wie vor die verlässlichsten und auch über Jahrhunderte nachzuverfolgenden Nachweise.

Virtuelle Herbarien und botanische Online-Portale

Im Zuge der Digitalisierung haben die Bereiche Bestimmungshilfen und Floristik bei Senckenberg einen starken Aufschwung erlebt. Schon seit 2010 betreibt Senckenberg das Online-Portal „Flora von Frankfurt“, auf dem interessierte Bürgerinnen und Bürger ihre Funde von Pflanzen im Stadtgebiet melden, aber auch Informationen abfragen können.

In Görlitz gibt es ebenfalls eine zentrale Anlaufstelle für die regionale Floristik. Hier sind Funddaten über das lokale Citizen-Science-Netzwerk, die Arbeitsgemeinschaft Sächsischer Botaniker und das zuständige Landesamt verfügbar. Als wichtige Referenz hat Senckenberg Görlitz jüngst das „Virtuelle Herbarium der Lausitz“ freigeschaltet. Darin finden sich von jedem in der Oberlausitz vorkommenden Taxon (also Arten, Unterarten, seltener auch Varietäten) sicher bestimmte Belege als hochauflösende Fotos – für alle frei verfügbar. Es ist die erste vollständig illustrierte Online-Flora für ein Gebiet in Deutschland.

Online-Hilfen auch für schwierige Fälle

Mit zwei von vier Herausgeber*innen spielt Senckenberg zudem eine zentrale Rolle bei der Fortführung des „Rothmaler“. Die „Exkursionsflora von Deutschland“ ist das wohl umfassendste Werk zur Bestimmung der heimischen Flora. Die Bestimmungsschlüssel im Rothmaler sind maßgebend, gerade im Hinblick auf schwierige Artengruppen. Trotzdem bleibt bei diesen taxonomisch kritischen Gruppen der Vergleich mit sicher bestimmtem Herbarmaterial weiterhin nötig.

Mussten früher dazu große Herbarien persönlich aufgesucht werden, kann das heute vom heimischen Computer aus geschehen. In enger Kooperation mit dem Herbarium Haussknecht an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena betreibt Senckenberg zudem eine spezialisierte Online-Flora für bestimmungskritische Sippen, die neben einem virtuellen Herbar auch Detailfotos bestimmungsrelevanter Merkmale bereitstellt. In einem weiteren Online-Portal wurden die „Chromosomenzahlen zur Flora von Deutschland“, die Senckenberg seit 2015 recherchiert, bundesweit verfügbar macht. Angebote wie diese werden angesichts der Biodiversitätskrise immer wichtiger und wir bauen unsere digitalen Ressourcen daher ständig aus. Doch wem der Blick auf den Bildschirm nicht genügt, dem steht immer noch ein Besuch in unseren Sammlungen offen. Die  Herbarbelege werden auch „real“ ihren Wert für Grundlagenforschung und Umweltfragen behalten.
