Museen, Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, Bürger*innen-Engagement, Beratung und Wissens- und Technologietransfer


Senckenberg wurde 1817 von engagierten Frankfurter Bürgern gegründet. Bis heute finden sich diese Wurzeln in der Struktur der Gesellschaft: Derzeit sind nahezu 7000 Mitglieder Teil von Senckenberg. Die Verankerung in der Zivilgesellschaft drückt sich auch dadurch aus, dass bei Senckenberg seit jeher die Forschung und ihre Ergebnisse vermittelt werden.

Die Umweltprobleme des Anthropozäns – insbesondere der Verlust der biologischen Vielfalt, der Klimawandel, die Ausbeutung natürlicher Ressourcen sowie Umweltverschmutzung und die Ausbreitung exotischer Arten – bedrohen die Natur und das menschliche Wohlergehen. Für den Schutz und die nachhaltige Nutzung der Natur brauchen wir ein systemisches Verständnis von Natur und eine wissenschaftliche Grundlage als Basis für gesellschaftliche und politische Entscheidungen.

Senckenbergs Programm Wissenschaft & Gesellschaft verbindet Forschung und die Interessen verschiedener gesellschaftlicher Akteure und strebt den Dialog und den Austausch zwischen Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft an. Dabei machen wir Forschung für Bürger*innen greifbar und verständlich, identifizieren gesellschaftliche Wissensbedarfe und integrieren sie in unsere Geobiodiversitäts-Forschung. Diese orientiert sich an den Prinzipien und der Methodik der transdisziplinären Forschung, d.h. sie ist problemorientiert, integrativ und partizipativ. Im politischen und gesellschaftlichen Dialog übernimmt Senckenberg eine unabhängige Rolle und stellt wissenschaftlich fundierte Handlungsoptionen und in Einzelfällen, wenn wissenschaftliche Ergebnisse dies möglich und erforderlich machen, Handlungsempfehlungen zur Verfügung. Senckenberg trägt mit seinem Programm Wissenschaft & Gesellschaft gemäß der Agenda der Leibniz-Forschungsmuseen zu gesellschaftlichen Transformations-Prozessen und zur Entwicklung einer demokratischen Wissensgesellschaft bei.

Seit 2017 hat Senckenberg sein Programm Wissenschaft & Gesellschaft grundlegend umstrukturiert, entwickelt und erweitert. Während der Auftrag, die Prinzipien und der Ansatz des Programms einheitlich sind, sind die spezifischen Instrumente und Aktivitäten nach Formaten und gesellschaftlichen Akteuren in fünf Einheiten gegliedert: Museen, Bürger*innen-Engagement, Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, Beratung sowie Wissens- und Technologietransfer.

Museen

Mit unseren Ausstellungen wenden wir uns sowohl an Expert*innen als auch an Bürger*innen und bieten Plattformen des Staunens, des Lernens und des Disputs. Die drei Senckenberg-Museen in Frankfurt am Main, Dresden und Görlitz verfügen insgesamt über eine Dauerausstellungsfläche von ca. 6.800 m² und empfangen jährlich rund 450.000 Besucher. Anschaulich und gut verständlich präsentieren wir dort Ergebnisse unserer Geobiodiversitäts-Forschung und richten uns an alle Bildungsstufen und Altersgruppen. Senckenberg fördert so den Wissenstransfer und das öffentliche Verständnis von Wissenschaft und Forschung. Unsere Museen sind regional, national und international anerkannte Orte der Wissenschaftskommunikation, der Bildung und des lebenslangen Lernens, einschließlich des generationsübergreifenden Wissensaustauschs.

Wir bieten geführte Bildungsprogramme für ein breites Besucherspektrum an, an denen bis zu 75.000 Personen im Jahr teilnehmen. Darüber hinaus sind unsere Museen Plattformen für den Dialog und für die Interaktion mit der Gesellschaft, mit dem Ziel, gesellschaftliche und politische Veränderungen zum Wohle von Natur und Mensch zu unterstützen.

In Frankfurt streben wir derzeit eine grundlegende Erneuerung, Modernisierung und Erweiterung der Dauerausstellungen an, das „Projekt Neues Museum“. Mit den neuen Themenräumen zu „Tiefsee, Meeresforschung und Korallenriffen“ unternehmen wir erste Schritte zur Umsetzung dieses Projekts. Diese neuen Ausstellungsräume präsentieren Senckenbergs marine Biodiversitätsforschung und die unserer nationalen und internationalen Partner und geben Einblicke in Senckenbergs systemischen Naturansatz, der die Biowissenschaften, die Geowissenschaften und die sozial-ökologische Forschung umfasst. Ein Ensemble von drei neuen Schauräumen bietet eine innovative Szenografie, die ein immersives, emotionales Erlebnis ermöglicht und unsere Besucher*innen mit mehreren Sinnen anspricht. Die Ausstellung dient als Plattform für den Austausch von Wissenschaftler*innen mit der Gesellschaft. Sie soll zu Diskussionen anregen und Besucher*innen für die Rolle der Ozeane im Erdsystem sensibilisieren.

Am 3.9.2020 wurden zwei neue Themenräume im Senckenberg Naturmuseum Frankfurt eröffnet: Tiefsee und Meeresforschung. Die Eröffnung fand per Livestream statt und kann hier angeschaut werden.

Bürger*innen-Engagement

Wir unterstützen bürgerschaftliches Engagement und Bürgerwissenschaften und fördern die Zusammenarbeit von Wissenschaftler*innen und interessierten Bürger*innen – in den Bereichen Forschung, Sammlungen und Wissenstransfer. Senckenberg wurde 1817 als Bürgergesellschaft gegründet und ist bis heute stark in der Gesellschaft verankert. Senckenberg hat fast 7.000 Mitglieder, darunter 330 Schulen und fast 250 Kindertagesstätten. Senckenberg-Mitglieder unterstützen Senckenberg sowohl finanziell als auch durch ihr Engagement und durch ihre Netzwerke.

Wir arbeiten in Forschung, Sammlung und Wissenstransfer eng mit Bürgerwissenschaftler*innen zusammen. Insgesamt gibt es mehr als 20 bürgerwissenschaftliche Senckenberg-Projekte. 1.750 registrierte Bürgerwissenschaftler*innen und 170 Ehrenamtliche arbeiten mit Senckenberg zusammen. Für viele taxonomische Projekte und Sammlungen sind fachkundige Bürgerwissenschaftler*innen und ehrenamtliche Mitarbeiter*innen unverzichtbar. Umgekehrt engagieren sich viele unserer Forscher*innen sehr aktiv in der Bürgergesellschaft.

Öffentlichkeitsarbeit

Unsere PR-Aktivitäten wenden sich an eine breite Öffentlichkeit. Wir erzählen spannende Geschichten, treten ein in einen Dialog und wecken das Interesse und Verständnis für Natur. Senckenberg trägt das Thema Natur sowie ihre wissenschaftliche Erforschung in die Gesellschaft – einschließlich der damit verbundenen Methodik und Unsicherheiten. Wir arbeiten mit einer Vielzahl gezielter Kommunikationsinstrumente: soziale Medien, proaktive Pressearbeit, Kurzfilme, populärwissenschaftliche Bücher, etwa hundert populärwissenschaftliche Artikel pro Jahr, das populärwissenschaftliche Magazin „Natur-Forschung-Museum“ und die Durchführung populärwissenschaftlicher Vortragsreihen. Der Erfolg unserer Öffentlichkeitsarbeit spiegelt sich in fast 29.000 Zitierungen pro Jahr in den Medien und mehr als 30.000 Followern in verschiedenen Social-Media-Formaten wider.

 

Beratung

Wir engagieren uns aktiv in der wissenschaftlichen Beratung, fördern systemische Lösungen zum Schutz und zur nachhaltigen Nutzung der Natur und wenden uns an Politik, Verwaltung, Nichtregierungsorganisationen, Unternehmen und an die Zivilgesellschaft – auf internationaler und nationaler Ebene. Zudem beteiligt Senckenberg sich aktiv an der Politikberatung. So möchte die Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung mit dem Policy Brief und dem Politik-Newsletter „GeoBioDivNews“ politischen Entscheider*innen aktiv bei gesellschaftlichen Fragen unterstützen. International tragen wir, aufbauend auf unserer Forschung zu Arten und Ökosystemen, zur Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) und zum Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Weltklimarat (IPCC) bei. Außerdem ist die IPBES Technical Support Unit on Data bei uns verortet. Unsere Wissenschaftler*innen sind in einer Vielzahl von Weltnaturschutzunion-Fachgruppen (International Union for Conservation of Nature, IUCN) aktiv. Senckenberg koordiniert die „Forschungsinitiative zum Erhalt der Artenvielfalt“ des Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) und leitet eine Stellungnahme der Nationalen Akademien zum Thema „Rückgang der Artenvielfalt in Agrarlandschaften, was wissen wir und was können wir tun?“. Generell sind unsere Wissenschaftler*innen aktive Mitglieder in Akademien und relevanten strategischen, beratenden Gremien, z.B. der Leopoldina, der Deutschen Akademie der Wissenschaften, der Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur, Mainz, der Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften, der Senatskommission der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) für Grundsatzfragen der Biologischen Vielfalt oder der DFG-Senatskommission für Erdsystemforschung. Wir engagieren uns aktiv als Berater*innen des Bundestages und mehrerer Landtagskommissionen und beteiligen uns an öffentlichen Debatten, Runden Tischen und parlamentarischen Veranstaltungen. Darüber hinaus bietet Senckenberg der „Fridays for Future“-Bewegung eine Plattform für Austausch und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit.

Wissens- und Technologietransfer

Das Programm Wissenschaft & Gesellschaft setzt verschiedene Instrumente ein, um die Entwicklung von Anwendungen sowie anwendungsorientierter Forschung zu fördern und zu unterstützen. Senckenberg hat eine drittmittelfinanzierte „Wissens- und Technologietransferstelle“ (Knowledge and Technology Transfer Office, KTTO) eingerichtet, die Marktanalysen anbietet, Erfindungen und Patentierungen unterstützt sowie Existenzgründungen und Research & Development -Kooperationen mit Unternehmen begleitet. Ein vielversprechendes Ergebnis dieser Aktivitäten ist die Ausgründung „Phytoprove“, mit der pflanzliche Defizite an Nährstoffen und Wasser quantifiziert werden können und gezielte Düngungsmaßnahmen angestrebt werden. Phytoprove gewann nicht nur den Leibniz-Gründungspreis 2020, mit dem Start-ups ausgezeichnet werden, die sich durch herausragende Leistungen bei der Entwicklung innovativer, tragfähiger Geschäftsideen auszeichnen, sondern wurde 2019 auch Vizemeister im Businessplan-Wettbewerb des deutschen Science4Life Venture Cup in dem Bereich Life Sciences.

Zudem haben wir ein Patent auf einen neuen Wirkstoff aus Pilzen als vielversprechendes neuartiges Biopestizid und Immuntoxin eingereicht (in Zusammenarbeit mit der Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule Zürich). Sehr erfolgreich sind auch bei der Übertragung mechanischer Prinzipien von Organismen auf Anwendungen (Bionik). Unterstützt durch Drittmittel (BMBF) bauen wir derzeit die Strukturen und die Betreuung der Wissenschaftler*innen im KTT aus und professionalisieren sie.

General Director of the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research

Klement Tockner ist Generaldirektor der Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung und Professor für Ökosystemwissenschaften an der Goethe-Universität, Frankfurt am Main (seit 2021). Er war Präsident des Österreichischen Wissenschaftsfonds FWF (2016–2020), Professor für Aquatische Ökologie an der Freien Universität Berlin (2007–2020) und Direktor des Leibniz Instituts für Gewässerökologie und Binnenfischerei (IGB), Berlin (2007–2016). Er promovierte in Zoologie und Botanik an der Universität Wien (1993) und erhielt eine Titularprofessur an der ETH Zürich (2005).

Klement Tockner ist ein international führender Süßwasserforscher, insbesondere in den Forschungsbereichen Biodiversität, Ökosystemwissenschaften und Umweltmanagement. Er war Chefredakteur der Zeitschrift Aquatic Sciences (2005–2014) und ist Fachredakteur der Zeitschrift Ecosystems. Er hat rund 250 wissenschaftliche Arbeiten veröffentlicht, darunter mehr als 190 ISI-Artikel. Im Jahr 2009 gab er ein umfassendes Buch über europäische Flüsse heraus („Rivers of Europe“, Elsevier / Academic Press; 2. Auflage im Jahr 2022).

Klement Tockner hat erfolgreich große inter- und transdisziplinäre Projekte wie das von der Europäischen Kommission geförderte Projekt „BioFresh“ geleitet. Er berät wissenschaftliche Einrichtungen weltweit in deren strategischer Entwicklung und ist Mitglied mehrerer wissenschaftlicher Gremien und Beiräte, darunter der Wissenschaftsrat der Bundesregierung Deutschland, Universitätsrat der Universität Salzburg, Österreich, und Mitglied des wissenschaftlichen Beirats an der Universität Basel, Schweiz. Er ist gewähltes Mitglied der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina und der Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur Mainz. Für den FWF erhielt er 2019 den Wikimedia Preis für „Freies Wissen“, 2023 wurde er als „National Champion“ des ersten Frontiers Planet Prize (2023) ausgezeichnet.
