Diversität ist der wissenschaftliche Eckpfeiler von Senckenberg. Wir glauben, dass die Diversifizierung der menschlichen Komponente des Senckenberg-Ökosystems unsere Stärke und Widerstandsfähigkeit erhöhen wird. Der Senckenberg Diversitäts- und Integrationsausschuss wurde Ende 2020 gebildet und ist dem Direktorium unterstellt. Es hat die Aufgabe, die Senckenberg Diversitätsstrategie zu entwickeln und umzusetzen. Eines der vielen Ziele ist, die Vielfalt unserer Mitarbeiter*innen sowie unser Engagement für die Gesellschaft zu erhöhen.
Der Ausschuss setzt sich aus Vertreter*innen zusammen, die aus Schlüsselaspekten der Organisation und jedem der Senckenberg-Institute ernannt werden, und wird von vielen weiteren interessierten Mitarbeiter*innen in der gesamten Institution unterstützt, die zu dieser Arbeit beitragen.
My group works on the evolution of diversity in molluscs and other marine invertebrates. Morphology shapes how each species responds to environmental change, in the modern world and in the fossil record. We often focus on very strange body forms, like bivalved gastropods, or apparently conservative forms, like chitons. We use tomography (right) to visualise animal adaptations in 3D and understand the world from other organisms‘ points of view.
Understanding evolutionary radiations, survivorship, and the way animals respond to environmental change, require high resolution data from multiple disciplines, and the research infrastructure in museum collections. The work in my research group crosses genetics, morphology, anatomy, neurobiology, physiology, computational modelling, and experimental approaches, to understand species diversity.

Angel Blanco studied Geology (Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), 2003). Has the Master in Experimental Paleontology (UB) (2005) and Master in Prehistoric Archaeology, Ancient and Medieval History (UAB) (2012). During several years he have worked as curatorial preparator and taxidermist in the most important Museums or Scientific Institutions of Spain (Museum of Natural Sciences of Barcelona, Natural History Museum of Madrid, Zooarch Lab of Barcelona…). Also, he worked during the same period as palaentologist in different sites in Spain from Cretaceous to Early Pleistocene. Currently, he works on multiple fish assamblages from Pleistocene sites of Iberian Peninsula (Atapuerca, Barranco León, Fuentenueva 3 Baza and Pinilla del Valle) and Germany (Hohlenstein-Stadel, Helga Abri and Hohle Fels), on others from Pliocene-Pleistocene in Republic of Georgia (Dmanisi); early history and historical time deposits of Neolithic Age (The Draga, El Mirador), Iberian (Mas Castellar de Pontós) or medieval (Castles of Montsoriu and El Catllar).

My main research interests are human relationships with, and the conservation of nature in general and wildlife in particular. For my PhD at Greifswald University, I investigated genetic aspects of lesser horseshoe bat recolonization in Central Germany. During the associated fieldwork and interaction with roost managers and other stakeholders, I discovered my interest for the human dimensions of wildlife conservation. As a postdoc at the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre, I am currently implementing two projects addressing socio-psychological aspects of wolf conservation, with a strong focus on the role of factual knowledge. (You are invited to test your own knowledge about wolves in my Leibniz quiz.) Inspired by this work and my integrative nature education training (Wildnispädagogik), I have also developed a keen interest in human-nature relationships in general and their ramifications for nature conservation and people’s quality of life.

I am a geologist interested in volcanology, paleoenvironmental studies and climate change.
I am currently working on reconstructing sea surface temperature and sea surface salinity at the scale of the entire Mediterranean Sea during the time interval between 7.25 and 5.97 Ma. I plan to quantify changes in these essential palaeoceanographic parameters recorded in the cyclic sedimentary successions exposed now on land in the Mediterranean region (e.g. Spain, Italy, Cyprus). The targeted 7.25 and 5.97 Ma time interval was marked by increased restriction of Mediterranean Sea – Atlantic connection, ultimately leading to the Messinian Salinity Crisis (5.97 – 5.33 Ma) when the Mediterranean Sea transformed into a huge evaporitic basin, causing a hydrological and subsequent ecological crisis.
To quantify changes in the sea surface temperature, I will simultaneously use and TEX86, proxies base on alkenones and glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers, biomarkers produced by coccolithophorid algae and Archaea, respectively. Afterwards, the sea surface temperature estimates will be combined with δ18O measured on planktonic foraminiferafor ultimately reconstructing the sea surface salinity for the interval preceding the Mediterranean Messinian Salinity Crisis.
The areas I am focusing on are Sorbas basin, Spain (in the Western Mediterranean), Gibilscemi/Falconara, Italy (in the Central Mediterranean) and Pissouri, Cyprus (in the Eastern Mediterranean).
