Abteilung Paläoanthropologie

Die Erforschung der biokulturellen Evolution und Diversität der Menschen ist die Kernkompetenz der Abteilung Paläoanthropologie im Senckenberg Forschungsinstitut und Naturmuseum Frankfurt. Die Untersuchungen zur Evolution des Menschen konzentrieren sich auf sechs komplementäre Arbeitsbereiche:

Die gemeinsame Forschungsrichtung der Abteilung Paläoanthropologie umfasst Prozesse und Einflussgrößen der biokulturellen Evolution der Menschen in ihren Wechselwirkungen mit der Umwelt. Dieses Konzept wurde in den vergangenen 10 Jahren erarbeitet und integriert die biologische und kulturelle Diversität der Menschen. Ziel ist ein systemisches Verständnis für eine fokussierte Darstellung und Koordination des Forschungsschwerpunktes biokulturelle Diversität bei Senckenberg.

Herzstück der Abteilung ist die Sammlung G.H.R. von Koenigswald, die 1968 als Dauerleihgabe der Werner-Reimers-Stiftung, Bad Homburg, zur Erforschung der evolutionären Biodiversität und Paläoökologie in Südostasien, zusammen mit dem weltbekannten Paläoanthropologen G.H.R. von Koenigswald († 1982) zum Senckenberg Forschungsinstitut und Naturmuseum Frankfurt, kam.

Der Abteilung Paläoanthropologie in Frankfurt a.M. sind die oben genannten Sektionen und Arbeitsbereiche mit sechs Wissenschaftler*innen zugeordnet.

Forschungsinteressen

Meine Forschungsinteressen sind vielfältig und reichen von der allgemeinen Paläobiologie und Paläoanthropologie von Säugetieren bis zu fast allen Themen von Knochen- und Zahnanalysen. 2001 habe ich bei Senckenberg ein Bildverarbeitungslabor für die 3D-Digitalisierung, virtuelle Bearbeitung, Rekonstruktion und Morphometrie von Wirbeltier-Hartgewebe eingerichtet. Der Schwerpunkt meiner Forschung liegt auf der Struktur und Funktion von Zähnen mit einem Hauptaugenmerk auf der evolutionären Entwicklung, diätetischen und kulturellen Anpassungen im Kausystem. Eine Reihe meiner nationalen und internationalen Forschungsprojekte, die von der DFG (z. B. DFG-FOR771) und der EU (EU-MRTN-CT-2005-019564) finanziert wurden, haben zur Entwicklung der bekannten Okklusalen Fingerabdruck-Analyse (OFA) geführt.
