Forschungsinteressen

‘Plant environment and resource exploitation in SW Ethiopia >50 ka to the present’

I am currently working on wood charcoal in the framework of a multidisciplinary research project focussing on plant environment and resource exploitation in SW Ethiopia, >50 ka to the present. The aim is to reconstruct the paleoenvironment and characterize human impact on the landscape. I am also working on a database that list the woody species of the Dry Afromontane of Ethiopia, their wood anatomical features and includes an electronic identification key. PIs: Katharina Neumann and Karen Hahn.

2020 | Anthracologist at CNRS, Montpellier, France

I identified wood charcoal from Holocene to Pleistocene assemblages from Kourou and Apatou, French Guiana, in the frame of the SOURCE multidisciplinary research project. The aim was to help reconstructing the paleoenvironment. PI: Pierre-Olivier Antoine.

2020 | Anthracologist for the Arkaeos Association, Montpellier, France

I identified wood charcoal from a 19th century lime kiln of the Sucrerie plantation, Martinique. The aim was to better understand wood management and wood economy by the lime kiln workers from this period. Archaeological excavations led by Christophe Vaschalde and David Ollivier.

2019 | PhD at University of Montpellier

My thesis subject was the ‘Characterization of the impact of pre-Columbian anthropogenic fires on the forest vegetation of the Nouragues Natural Reserve in French Guiana using an anthracological approach’. I identified wood charcoal from anthropogenic sites and curated the wood charcoal collection from French Guiana which is at the Institut des Sciences de l’Evolution, Montpellier. I was supervised by Laurent Bremond and Jean-François Molino. My PhD was funded by the Center for the study of biodiversity in Amazonia (LabEx CEBA).

Dr. Alessandro Urciuoli
Post-doctoral researcher

Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology and Biodiversity, Alessandro Urciuoli is a Margarita Salas Postdoctoral Fellow at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain). He is also visiting researcher at the Paleoanthropology Division of the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum Frankfurt, as well as associate researcher at the Catalan Paleontological Institute Miquel Crusafont (Spain). His main research line deals with the evolution of the inner ear anatomy in catarrhines primates, with particular emphasis on that of hominins and of the ape-and-human clade. Author of several papers in JCR journals of high impact (e.g., Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, eLife, Journal of Human Evolution, and American Journal of Biological Anthropology), he aims to clarify the evolutionary history of early Homo species (Homo ergaster and Homo erectus) in Africa and Asia through the inspection semicircular canal shape with different geometric morphometrics methods. Most recently, he has been dedicating efforts to perform morphofunctional analyses of the middle ear and the cochlea to reconstruct the hearing capabilities of extinct hominins, and provide insights into the evolution of language within the human clade.
