Alles über Insekten


Mehr als sechzig Prozent aller bekannten Tierarten auf der Welt sind Insekten. Sie sind in fast allen Lebensräumen zu finden und wahre Überlebenskünstler. Doch seit einigen Jahren sinkt ihre Zahl dramatisch, und auch in manchen Gebieten Deutschlands sind weit über die Hälfte aller Insekten verschwunden. Welche Auswirkungen hat das auf die Natur – und auf uns Menschen? Höchste Zeit, die kleinen Kerbtiere ins Rampenlicht zu rücken, denn Insekten sind für uns überlebenswichtig.

Aktion »1 m² für eine grünere Welt«

Der Verlust ihrer natürlichen Lebensräume – durch Landwirtschaft, aber auch durch Straßen, Häuser und kurz gemähte Rasenflächen – stellt für Insekten eine große Gefahr dar. Viele ihrer Arten haben hier keinen Platz mehr. In Kooperation mit der ZEIT laden wir Sie deshalb ein, etwas daran zu ändern und einen Quadratmeter Ihres Balkons oder Gartens mit insektenfreundlichen Blumen zu begrünen. Der ZEIT-Ausgabe vom 4. Mai 2023 (Nr. 19/23) wird ein Samentütchen beigelegt. Dieses Tütchen beinhaltet eine von Expert*innen ausgewählte Mischung von Feld- und Wildblumen, die Futter und Unterschlupf für viele verschiedene Insekten bieten und noch dazu jedes Zuhause aufhübschen. Insektenforschung bei Senckenberg

Insekten nehmen mehr als sechzig Prozent aller beschriebenen Tierarten ein. Trotz ihrer großen Verbreitung, unglaublichen Artenvielfalt und ökologischen Bedeutung bleibt uns das Reich der Insekten im Alltag größtenteils verborgen. Das Bekanntwerden des dramatischen Rückgangs unter Fluginsekten innerhalb der letzten Jahrzehnte, dokumentiert in der Krefelder Studie von 2017, hat die Tiergruppe jedoch in das Licht der Öffentlichkeit gerückt und viele zum genaueren Hinsehen animiert. Auch bei Senckenberg gehört die Entomologie (Insektenkunde) zu den klassischen Forschungsbereichen und innerhalb der Bürgerwissenschaften (Citizen Science) haben sich interessante Projekte etabliert, die sich sowohl dem Schutz als auch der Erfassung der Artenvielfalt von Insekten widmen. Das große Insektensterben

Auf Basis des vorhandenen Wissens haben Senckenberg-Wissenschaftler*innen deshalb zusammen mit Kolleg*innen aus Salzburg und Stellenbosch die wesentlichen Gründe für den aktuellen Insektenrückgang zusammengetragen. Ein Faktor, der den massiven Rückgang vieler ökologisch anspruchsvoller Arten maßgeblich mit verursacht, ist der dramatische Verlust an hochwertigen Lebensräumen wie blütenreichen Wiesen und Weiden. Dadurch und wegen der vielerorts weiter wachsenden Nutzungsintensität in der Feldflur nimmt die „Durchlässigkeit“ der Normallandschaft für Tiere weiter ab, es kommt zu einer Verinselung der Habitate. Das verhindert die spätere Wiederbesiedlung und zerstört die sogenannte Metapopulationsstruktur; mit der Konsequenz eines weiteren, schleichenden Artenverlusts auf diesen Flächen. Zusätzlich stehen viele Arten in den verbleibenden ökologisch hochwertigen Flächen durch abnehmende Habitatqualität (u. a. durch Randeffekte, unzureichende oder nicht angepasste Pflegekonzepte, Einträge von Stickstoff) immer mehr unter Druck. Die Nutzungsintensivierungen in der Normallandschaft führen zu weiteren Rückgängen, von denen auch eigentlich häufige und anspruchslose Arten betroffen sind. Sie verschwinden zwar nicht völlig, sind aber viel seltener als früher. Außerdem kommen etliche Arten anscheinend nicht mit den sich verändernden klimatischen Bedingungen zurecht und verschwinden in für sie klimatisch ungünstiger werdenden Gebieten mehr und mehr, vor allem wenn die sonstigen ökologischen Rahmenbedingungen sich ebenfalls negativ entwickeln. Schmetterlinge, Käfer, Bienen, Libellen, Termiten und Flöhe – die Welt der Insekten könnte vielfältiger nicht sein. Ob zum Bestäuben von Blütenpflanzen, als Nahrung für eine Vielzahl anderer Tiere oder zur Verwertung von abgestorbenen Tieren und Pflanzen: Insekten erfüllen eine Vielzahl ökologischer Funktionen. Die Anzahl ihrer Arten wird auf 3 bis 4 Millionen geschätzt. Mit ihren sechs Beinen lassen sie sich leicht von den achtbeinigen Spinnentieren unterscheiden. Und während der Körper der Spinnentiere nur aus zwei Abschnitten aufgebaut ist, weisen Insekten einen dreiteiligen Körperaufbau aus Kopf, Rumpf und Hinterleib auf. Im Gegensatz zu den Wirbeltieren besitzen Insekten kein „Endoskelett“, das heißt keine Knochen im Inneren ihres Körpers. Sie haben eine Körperhülle aus Chitin, also ein Außenskelett (auch „Exoskelett“ genannt), wie es beispielsweise auch bei den Krebstieren vorkommt. Sie wollen noch mehr erfahren? „Insekt des Jahres“ 2023

Das Landkärtchen ist das „Insekt des Jahres 2023“ in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz. Das Kuratorium unter dem Vorsitz von Prof. Dr. Thomas Schmitt, Senckenberg Deutsches Entomologisches Institut in Müncheberg, wählte den Tagfalter aus einer Reihe von Vorschlägen. Was für Verwirrung sorgen kann, ist, dass der Schmetterling wie zwei unterschiedliche Arten aussieht, die im Frühjahr und erneut im Sommer fliegenden Falter des Landkärtchens, Araschnia levana. Des Rätsels Lösung: Aus den Raupen von Frühjahrs- bzw. Sommergeneration entwickeln sich unterschiedlich gefärbte Schmetterlinge. Der zu den Edelfaltern (Nymphalidae) zählende Schmetterling weist nämlich einen der extremsten Saisondimorphismen auf, der bei Insekten bekannt ist. Die Frühjahrsgeneration besitzt eine orangefarbene Grundfarbe mit schwarzen Zeichnungselementen, die Sommergeneration hingegen ist überwiegend schwarz, mit einem gebogenen weißen Band auf Vorder- und Hinterflügel. Die Flügel-Unterseite ist bei beiden Formen gleich, relativ bunt und von zahlreichen, unterschiedlich dicken Linien durchzogen. Das Ganze erinnert ein wenig an eine Landkarte, was dem Falter auch seinen deutschen Namen eingebracht hat. Ein Geschlechtsdimorphismus wie bei vielen anderen Schmetterlingen existiert nicht, Männchen und Weibchen unterscheiden sich somit innerhalb einer Generation nicht.

Vom Insektenmonitoring zur Pflege von Insektenwiesen und zurück – Wirkungskraft von Citizen Science in der Gesellschaft

Der dramatische Insektenrückgang wird als Thema zunehmend von der Wissenschaft in die Gesellschaft getragen. Entsprechend werden Insektenforscher*innen immer häufiger dazu befragt. Aber es sind wenige, und es wird mehr über Wildbienen geredet, als es echte Wildbienenkenner*innen gibt. Zudem sind die Ursachen für den Insektenrückgang vielfältig und komplex. Wie kann da eine Transformation vom Insektensterben hin zur Erhaltung der für uns und die Ökosysteme so wichtigen Insekten gelingen? Können engagierte Citizen Scientists die Lücken füllen und „einspringen“ – sowohl, was die Artenkenntnis angeht, als auch in Bezug auf notwendiges Handeln? In seinem Vortrag berichtet Dr. Matthias Nuß, Sektionsleiter Lepidoptera bei Senckenberg, über zwei Citizen-Science-Projekten, in denen in Sachsen hierzu seit Jahren Erfahrungen gesammelt wurden – darauf aufbauend sollen sie in den kommenden Jahren beträchtlich ausgeweitet werden.
